Are these speakers even worth hooking up?

I've got 5 really old Sherwood sp-150s speakers, that came free with a tv from a long time ago. This is an identical set:

I have just recently made a dedicated home theatre room (12'x15'). I am planning to get an athena + panny xr55 combo to go along with my Sammy DLP and other goodies, but with christmas rolling around I don't have the funds to accomodate it. My GF has suggested getting me the xr 55 for christmas and so I was wondering if it would even be worth my time to hook these speakers up to the reciever...

I know they aren't top of the line..but how bad could they be? My other option is to just hold off on the system and purchase the B1's, C1, Dayton 12", and XR55 like I had originally planned, just in a few months.

My name has Duke in it but I would not get them. I would wait the few months and get what you have listed above. I think it will be tons better then what that setup will get you. Patience is part of the game. I had to use it to build my system as well. In the long run you will see that it does pay off.

they will sound better than the future speakers now, as they will make noise now, whereas the future speakers will not make noise for some time. However the future speakers will make much better noise and should be brought to the now as soon as possible.

Point taken. Athena's here I come.
Maybe the Sherwoods sound as good as the Athenas, maybe better. You won't know until you listen. Take nothing for granted until YOU compare.
Well at $20 per speaker, you probably couldn't find anything cheaper.....I say throw them out.

As opposed to what? Just staring at the receiver?

You already have them. Use them. Start enjoying surround sound. Certainly better than TV speakers. What have you got to lose?

When the new speakers arrive, simply swap them out.

sure, if you have them, use them. They'll probably suck, but it works to enjoy music, right?

I mean, yeah I have a great Dynaudio setup in my room, but my '89 Volvo with the left side speakers non functional, and the right side ones rattling and sounding like crap on NPR, so what? It's not like I don't ever turn on the radio when I'm in the car. No, it doesn't sound "good" but it's fine. I'm sure there are tons of people with incredible audio systems that also listen to their clock radios in the morning too. you've got the speakers, use them if they work in the interim.

I also have some bose speakers that sound about as bad as my volvo speakers, but they work fine as a terciary stereo in a backroom for a little muzak. Ain't nothing wrong with that! I've removed the bose logos though ;).
