Nice storie!! thanks for the tip.

This thing worried me a bit. Why didnt he use 10.3.8 with EyeTV, i cant imagine that Anandtech is not smart enough to test this. Or would it be to big even for EyetTV?

The problem, however, is that we haven't been able to find any applications that offer hardware accelerated MPEG-2 transport stream playback. It seems that the best application for playing back these transport streams natively is VLC (also available for the PC), which doesn't have any sort of hardware decode acceleration support. The end result is that anything above a 13Mbps stream ends up dropping frames on the 1.25GHz Mac mini, meaning that basically all HD streams are unplayable on the mini even though they record fine. The only solution here is to transcode the transport stream to something playable (e.g. DivX) before using your mini as a playback device, which is obviously a lot more work. Another option is to use only the mini as a capture device, and send the transport stream to a fileserver elsewhere in your house for playback or transcoding. The ideal solution would be to have a player that properly took advantage of the hardware, as the 1.25GHz G4 should be enough to playback the MPEG-2 transport stream. Currently, such a solution doesn¡Çt exist for OS X.

Well, let's see what they have to say...

I guess they are not smart enough to test EyeTV. :D
WORD! I'm pretty satisfied playing my recorded HD content at 1/2 the size using EyeTV.

My first thought is that the article was likely written before 10.3.8 hit the streets so looking at it now its easy ask "why didn't they try 10.3.8" but there is a lag between the spark that becomes an article and the time it gets posted.

Despite the knocks against the Mac mini, I think its a good little insight into the Mac mini.

Of course, the folks who are really deep in the know are here in ths forum.

Regards,
But, EyeTV has been able to play .ts since its release the first week of July 2004.

So, when are you going to add 5C support? Just kidding of course.
A couple of things bothered me about this article -- one was that they flatly say that iLife costs $79, when any mini buyer will get it for free. The other is this

There's no indication that Apple will fix their de-interlacing algorithms in the next version of OS X, but if Apple is to be taken seriously as a player in the digital convergence world, they need to start with the basics, including fixing their DVD player.
From what I've heard the Tiger DVD player will be vastly superior. Their "no indication" for improvements sounds more like negative wish fulfillment than reality.

The iRecord stuff was very informative.

Regards,
I agree with devotion, and might add a important thing about why Mac Mini is a hit, THE OS.

I never understand why people compares apple to oranges, macs are unique, they build the machine and develop their OS, and lots of software, and don't forget STYLE.

Yes a Honda Civic is a great car but I would rather drive a ROVER. and so it goes the same to, the computer and electronic world,

Unfortunately negotiations with the controlling authority have gone sour (just kidding too).

As for non-encrypted recording, there has been a recent flurry of interest in my apps/modifications even before the article, and already some due to the article. They were originally just for a few brave souls in the original Mac Recording thread to have something slightly better than the two app solution in the SDK, but I'm setting aside some chunks of time to get back to it now since it looks like more than a few people could benefit from it.
