I played Solaris today on the 2600. What a great game!! That game was ahead of its time.

. . . and don't forget that Combat is one of the greatest two player games ever created.

Atari Rule!!

Have you ever tried Ms. Pac-man for the 2600? They more then made up for the sloppy port of the original Pac-man.

Check it out if you haven't.

RODEO on the Atari 2600 was the jam.

Adventure, I was too young to understand it completely but I thought it was heckuva fun.

Frogger was where it was at, and Freeway!

Basketball, the way the guys would dribble would always crack me up, and Boxing!

Sorry, super nostalgia. You just took me back 22 years.

The Atari VCS rocked, the 2600 was for kids!

Jaguar was all about AvP. That one game was worth the price of the system.

You're right!!

It was the VCS.

I remember working my paper route for two months in '79 to save up the $199 for my VCS.

The first two games I had for it were Superman and Atari Chess.

I'm not sure I'm following this but the Atari 2600 Video Computer System (2600/VCS) were the same thing. Their consoles were 2600, 5200, 7800, and Jaguar. They did have a line of computers but they always called the 2600 the "Atari 2600 Video Computer System".

You've got it. The 2600 and VCS were the same thing. Frank was just being funny.

I think Atari sold the 2600 under the VCS banner in the early days.

I am getting older but here is what I recall:

The original Atari has only "Video Computer System" above the cart slot, no sign of 2600 anywhere. Combat however has CX-2601 marked on the cart itself.

There was a redesign sometime after and 2600 appeared on the unit.

Random trivia: The product number for the original Atari VCS was CX2600. The first few games had product numbers that followed. Combat was CX2601, Air-Sea Battle was CX2602 etc. (Note, topic for another day, Sears titles for common Atari games) Later VCS models numbers usually had some version of 2600 in it - i.e. the first 4-switch model was 2600A. However, the model number weren't really used as anything other than as model numbers on inventory sheets and whatnot.

When Atari introduced its updated home video system, it gave it the formal name of 5200, and started using 2600 as the part of the official name of the old VCS.

Nice trivia. If you aren't a big Atari fan I hate to think how many more model numbers and general info you've stored in memory over the years.

Trust me . . . the hardcore Atari collectors get super geeky about this kind of stuff. Heavy four switcher, two switcher, label variations, catalog variations, exclusive titles, etc. Pretty funny actually.
