Athenas or Polks ? HK or Panny ?

Hello All,

I need some help on deciding the things here. This will be my first home theater and looking for the best value for buck and a good quality sound as well. My room size is kind of 18 X10 excluding the kitchen. My total budget is $800. I can raise a little if the quality is a huge difference.

I have somethings in mind and need expert ideas to decide which one to pick:

1) Recevier: HK235 or Panasonic SA-XR55S

2) Subwoofer : DAYTON SUB-120 or Mirage S-10

3) Speakers : Athena or Polk

4) If Athena then for center speaker AS-C2 or AS-C1

5) Do I pick 2 pairs AS-B1's for front and rear or is it good to go with

Athena Micra-6 6-Piece Home Theater Speaker System or

Athena 15373 Micra 6 Speaker System, Silver/Black

If there are anything better than what I have in my mind please let me know. What are butkickers? where do I find them and how much are they?

I think I was unlucky to miss the deals on Athena's and Polk that we had couple of days back. Do you guys have any deals in mind? is it worth to wait for the deals or buy at the prices what we have now?

Please let me know your valuable suggestions

thanks

Well it still looks like there are a few B1s and C1s available. The Outpost/Frys deals are cyclic and will continue until the stock is gone, you just have to keep checking back. If you have a Frys in your area, look every Friday, that's when they go up.

As for Polk vs. Athena, that's a blind choice. The R30s are floorstanders so you don't need stands. The B1s (probably) have a better tweeter. I've only heard great things about them. You can't really lose at these prices either way. They are each quality entry level speakers.

I'm very happy with HK for features and sound quality, but I haven't heard the Panny, it's cheaper and has a ton of fans. Could be the best thing that's happened to audio, IDK. Decide what features you really want. The HK has variable bass management, On Screen Display and pre-outs. It's rated with less power, but HKs specs are understated. Most aren't. Owners who have tried both seem to think the 235 has more guts from what I've read.

The Mirage is by far the better sub, but it's out of stock. The color was being liquidated. This is a $500 sub. If they come back on at Vann's, definitely it's worth twice the price of the Dayton.

If your budget is $800 go with the Athena bookshelves or Polks. You'll be happier in the long run.

don't know about the polks, but the athena B1/C1 combo is very nice. very clear detailed sound. they've got to be some of the best budget speaker deals going.

my HK 235 should be delivered on wednesday, i'll let you know how i like it.
Thanks for the inputs. I was asking about both Polk and Athena's becuase I heard them in BB and CC. They sound great. Looks to me like everyone here like the Athena's. I decided to go with Athena B1/C1.

Do I have to buy four B1's and one C1? Or is there a differenc combination to make it more quality? What is the difference between a C1 and C2? Which one should I go with?

Coming to the Mirage Sub S-10 I don't see them as out of stock. They are available on Vanns and Tweeter. Vanns is selling them for $249. Will there be a huge difference in S-10 and S-12?

What are the stands everyone is using for the Athena B1's?

thanks

I've never heard or seen a C2, where did you find that?

Athena also makes floorstanding speakers (F1 and F2) but it'll cost you quite a bit more money. Those $99 B1's are closeout pricing. They've been replaced with the B1.2, same sound slightly different look with the grille off.

The best sound for home theater would come from 5 of the exact same speaker but usually ones setup won't allow for a bookshelf or tower as the center channel. So 4B1's and the C1 will work great for you.

Get those cheap Athena's from Audio Advisor while they still have inventory left!

Apologies....my mistake. I was talking about "Audition C1.2 Center Channel ". Any inputs on the mirage s10 or s12 or Denon ? Can buy them from Vanns for $249. Is it worth that price....those are on sale actually.

Looks like prefering four B1's is better than the micra's? Do you all agree?

thanks
I'm currently using this combination B1X4+C1+RX55+S10 , which sounds great..
The S10 and 12 on sale at Vanns are probably the best bang for buck sub deals going. $249 is a steal. $399 for the 12 is a steal. Yes the Athena AS series is quite a bit better than the Micras.

You'd better move fairly quickly, these deals have been going on for a while and there are limited quantities.

Quality gear closeouts happen from time to time, are not predictable, get talked about on AVS until they are over or the next one comes along. Both Athena and Polk stuff should just about be over. Something else will come by soon.
Thanks for all the info. I am still kind of confused to decide because my cousine is changing my mind in deciding the things here. He is asking me to go with the floor subwoofer. I am not sure what the difference would be for the floor sub and a regular one and which to pick. If floor subs are better than the regular once then can you guys please suggest one.

My cousine is asking me to pick a pair of F2.2 Speakers and a pair of AS - B1 or ws-100 tower speakers instead of four pairs or AS-B1's. Is that a good idea? What would be the difference? I know I will endup paying 200$ more but will there be a huge difference in the quality of sound?

Any idea on ws-100? How are they?

Initially I decided to go with HK235 but the specifications are 7 x 50W 7.1-Channel. Does it mean I can get max of 50w out of each speaker? Is that how it works? Is there any better one that I can go with.

I read some of the Yamaha770w produces 110 watts x 7. I don't know how to calculate the things here.

Hope I will be helped here.

Please, can somebody recommend a set of speaker stands for the AS-B1's?

They are sitting on the floor now. As Robert Redford said "there's got to be a better way". Help.

The F2.2s are floostanding speakers with 2 drivers and a tweeter, not a subwoofer. I'm sure they are great speakers and will benefit from more power, but are easily driven, very efficient speakers.

The HK 235 like all HK receivers is conservatively rated for power. Most entry level and even mid level receivers overstate or mislead the buyer regarding their watts per channel capabilities. In the budget area you might consider the Panny XR55. I believe it delivers 90+ wpc, though I've been told that the HK seems to be more powerful. Also, the Pio 1015 for a bit more money, has nice amps that I've been told hit close to their specs.

Omnimount Cosmic Series. There are many other options.
Helping in-laws out with a new system but they want black. Are the athenas (old AS-B1) black? I know they have a silver front, but are the sides black? Center as well? I might have to pick some up for the garage at that price!
sides and rear are black
thanks. I'm going to try and order a pair as well.
