it seems nobody here mentioned anything about this new chip from AMD :p ...

Today is the day that the NDAs will lift and AMD finally launches it 64 bit Desktop CPU range AKA Athlon64. Most enthusiasts have been waiting for this days since the "hammer" series was first announced back ages ago. All the waiting is over. We will be adding more links as more reviews start pouring out.

I'm pretty sure it would.

Don't forget though... they're comparing this to a non-released "Emergency edition" to the P4, which might mean something could change by the time it's released, and from what I hear The Athlon 64 platform is very buggy, and should produce even better scores once it matures.

Those benchmarks are 32-bit applications aren't they? Doesn't that negate the whole advantage of the AMD64. I would imaging that a 64-bit video encoder on a 64-bit OS would blow away the Pentiums.

Here's what I want to know from a HTPC perspective - how HOT does it get? What's the thermal quotient (your favorite benchmark / operating temperature to run benchmark). If the P4 EE was just a rebadged Xeon, it will be like having a little piece of the sun in your computer case. I hope the Athlon can do a little better.

One significant thing for HTPC use is that 64 bit PCIX allows the possibility of uncompressed HD capture.
