What is ATI thinking.

The current dongle specified for the 9700 connects to the DVI port. However, that means I cannot use it for my LCD main monitor. The 8500 has a VGA dongle.

Has anyone tried this?

To use the VGA-Componenet dongle/?

My understanding is that with the 8500 series the HD signal is sent out via the VGA port, while in newer generation cards it is sent via the DVI port. You cannot, to my knowledge, use an 8500 VGA adapter on the 9700.

You can use the black VGA dongle 8500 HDTV adapter on the 9500/9700 Radeons, just use the included DVI-VGA adapter on the DVI port of the 9700 and then the black adapter on top of that.

No, the HD signal is still going out the DVI port. What he's saying is that if you have an 8500 dongle laying around, you can use the adapter that came with your 9700 to convert the DVI output to VGA and then attach the 8500 dongle to that VGA connector. But the end result is that your DVI interface is being used to output HD.

Here's what your card would look like in the above scenario:

DVI --> DVI>VGA adapter --> 8500 dongle --> HDTV

VGA --> Computer monitor

"DVI --> DVI>VGA adapter --> 8500 dongle --> HDTV"yes

but

"VGA --> Computer monitor"no

Once you connect the adapter for component output, no other monitor outputs are active.

Another newbie question:

I have a 50" plasma with DVI in. HTPC has ATI 9500 Pro.

I am currently just using DVI cable from card to Plasma.

I assume I wouldn't need a Dongle - correct.

Do I still need to set up custom resolutions per Karnis' guide?

Just fired up first HTPC about 3 weeks ago, so still alot to learn.:confused:
