Well, I think I have learned the hard way that the ATI dongle doesn't play nice with my Saphire Radeon 9000 PRO. According to the user's guide that comes with the dongle/adapter, only the 8500 or 9700/9500 series are supported. News to me... well, not any more, really. I see the desktop on my TV, in a greenish, line-down-the-middle sort of way. I tried the ATI adapter 640x480p Powerstrip timings from the Karnis guide to no avail. Anyone know whether the Saphire Radeon 9000 PRO has DVI-I and whether it is compatible with the ATI dongle adapter?

One more thing: under Control Panel->Display->Settings->Advanced->Displays I have 2 monitors and 2 disabled (grayed out) TVs, so I can't even select the TV. Not looking good, huh.

I don't know if using the dongle with your 9000 is possible but this is what I would do. Do a fresh install of Catalyst drivers with only regular PC monitor connected. After reboot back to desktop to confirm driver install OK, turn off the PC and disconnect standard display. Check the dongle to make sure the dip switches are all turned on, then connect dongle to video card and HDTV. Be sure that dongle/HDTV is the only connection to video card. Boot up PC, keep fingers crossed.

Tried this to the letter, installing the latest Catalyst 3.7 drivers. No go. :(

Taken directly from the ATI HDTV adapter FAQ:

************************************************

Q2: What graphics cards does the HDTV Component Video Adapter support?

A2: ATI's HDTV Component Video Adapter supports RADEONâ„¢ 8500, RADEONâ„¢ 9500 and RADEONâ„¢ 9700 class of products with two (2) versions of the adapter:

VGA to YPrPb Adapter (black) is for use with RADEONâ„¢ 8500 class graphics boards. This includes:

RADEONâ„¢ 8500 (64MB)

RADEONâ„¢ 8500 (128 MB)

RADEONâ„¢ 8500LE (128MB)

DVI-I to YPrPb Adapter (Purple) is for use with the following graphics boards:

RADEONâ„¢ 9700 series

RADEONâ„¢ 9500 series

ALL-IN-WONDER® RADEON™ 8500DV (64MB)

ALL-IN-WONDER® RADEON™ 8500 (128MB)

Q3: Do I have to have a "Built by ATI" graphics accelerator to use ATI's HDTV Component Video Adapter?

A3: No. Both "Powered by ATI" and "Built by ATI" graphics accelerators can use the HDTV Component Video Adapter as long as a RADEONâ„¢ 8500, 9500, or 9700 family of products are being used.

I cannot say this with certainty but my guess is that your Saphire Radeon 9000 (essentially a Radeon 8500) requires the VGA to YPrPb Adapter (black) not the DVI-I to YPrPb Adapter (purple). Its possible that you have the wrong HDTV component adapter. Drop me a PM, I may be able to help.

Thanks Karnis, I should have figured you knew the answer. :)

Would I be correct in guessing that you tried both the DVI and VGA versions of the dongle with a 9000?

What adapter are you using BTW?

My understanding is that the 9000, 9100 and the 9200 are all really the 8500 and 8500le rebadged.

I am trading a 8500 withsomeone right now for a 9100 since i hardly use my 8500 and am going to try the 9100 with the HDTV adapter to see if it works

I agree with RTK and Karnis... To the best of my knowledge:

9000 and 9200 are basically the same and cannot use either adapter.

8500 and 8500le can use the VGA (black) version

8500DV, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800 can use the DVI (purple) version

I don't know if the 9100 is a rebadged 8500 or 8500DV but it should be able to use one of the adapters

I use the purple DVI adapter with my Sapphire Radeon 9600 128mb non-pro (fanless) so I know those work ;)
