My personal preference is for the NVidia line (I like the 6800GT, if you have enough hardware to back it up). There are all sorts of debates over this.
What do you mean by enough hardware to back it up? Do I need a faster CPU to use the NVidia cards?

No, but it's a nonsense to get a 6800GT with a CPU
Get a 6600GT to have also WMV hardware decoding.

No, I mean that without a lot of power behind it it's pointless to get a top flight video card. You're better off with a 6600 for instance over a 6800.
have a HT 540 3.4ghz 1.5gb ram
it really matters on what connection your looking at using with your tv, looks like you are going to be using DVI (am i correct?) if so then I'd recomend the 6600GT PCIe.

no need to spend that much money on the 850xt pe.

I basically have the same question:

Is it worth upgrading from my 9800 Pro to a 6600GT, outputting to a 30" LCD HDTV via DVI and a SVGA projector via VGA or component?

My only gripe with the 9800 Pro is that for some reason, in MCE I do not have menu highlights with nvidia's decoder. Thanks for any thoughts.
it will either be dvi or component.... but i have dual lcd screen 16:9 (2005dell) that i will use with just the pc (already ordered a dvi Y split so thinking a X800XT pe would be enough) so for dvd or tv i am planing to get a projector....

will the dvi y split be enough or should i get dual dvi...??

I too have a 9800 Pro and would like anyones thoughts on if it's worth upgrading to a 6600GT. I will be hooking it up via component to a 55" Mits RPTV and I am using the ATI HDTV Wonder as my tuner if that makes a difference.

Just purchased a 6600GT as an upgrade from 9800pro.....yes, image quality is improved for DVD/WMV HD playack. Very nice.
You really should read this:

It really depends more on what software you intend to run and what your CPU is.

With a 3.4ghz, no worries, your options are wide open. You can run ffdshow and nvidia decoder if you wish, or if you get and Nvidia card you can run hardware accelerated with VMR9/Purevideo.

I'd suggest you read this as well:

What is the resolution of your LCD display? If you want to run your desktop in cloned mode, the LCD will have to match the resolution of the projector(if you want to see both at the same time), which I doubt will be true in your case.

You'll have to post the exact equipment you'll be using, and how you intend on using it.

I have always thought that you go for the better video card for more capabilities in game play or video processing insofar as ffdshow filters are concerned. If you just want to watch DVD's in the best light capable, save yourself a few bucks. I just finished A-B ing an ATI 9800 and an Nvidia 5200 and if you played a shell game with me as to what card was being played, I could not tell the difference. This is on DVD playback only, of course. FFdshow being used....If you are a gamer, then go for the more expensive card, but for those who say this or that video card produces better picture quality for DVD, they must really be splitting hairs because I cannot see a real step-change between the middle and higher end of the video card spectrum....I wish I could because as an habitual upgrader I would be the first to plunk down my dough on a better card. Now the infocus 4805, that was a real step change over my X1.
