Just thought I would post this since I know many people are thinking about getting this.

Yeah, not too glowing of a review, especially for HTPC use. This is one thing, I think, that's going to make me move away from my HP slimline and into a mini-ATX setup that accepts full sized cards. Its not fun being limited by your case.
yeah it sounds like this thing sucks. I have been waiting for this card to come out for months and now it sucks. Is there something else on the horizon? I dont have a gpu other than the igp I have now. I dont game and I guess it doesnt matter too much as I was only going to use it as a power boost of sorts.
It's probably a matter of buggy first release drivers limiting the card; its pretty similar to the 4670 which is capable of VA deinterlacing etc. Though its pretty lame on ati's part.
Right now the cheapest best bitstreaming option is the 5670.

The 5570 should work but it's just neutered in the drivers. But the hardware is there. Don't know if they'll ever give us the features it's capable of.
Aside from the 5570 turning out to be a bit of a turd for HTPC usage is the bigger issue of ATI and the games they continue to play with their drivers.

Leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I hear that the drivers are doing things that even fool testing websites like Anandtech.

I really wish AMD bought Nvidia instead

Has anyone seen a review where "smooth video playback" was disabled?

It sounds like this is not needed on the 5570 and that the only limitation of this card is actually having this enabled.

That's the $64 dollar question.

Just like when everyone was positive that ATI had multi-channel PCM supported on the 785g chipset

I'll believe it when I see it from multiple sources.

i think rage3d had a review with ESVP or whatever turned off and they reported that VAD was working just fine no stutters.

I really think its just crappy release drivers that are limiting it, probably not their highest priority, though it should have been pretty high considering which market is probably going to want this card the most.

edit: yep here:

AnandTech posted a follow-up review today wrt the 5570, VAD, and ESVP.

It seems there was a 5570 specific bug with ESVP and VAD. Short of it is that I just ordered a 5570.

Nice, the new driver has changed my mind on the 5570.

It looks like I will be heading over to Newegg.

Actually, after reading that follow-up, I've concluded that the 5450 is MORE than enough for me. I'm going to use that $50 and get 4-5 more Blu-rays!!

I for one was quite surprised at how well the 5450 did with de0interlacing considering how poorly the 4550 does. I will agree that the 5450 is likely going to become the most popular HTPC card for some time to come, however, all ready having a 5750 and having seen both a 5450 and a 5570 in action on 1080i live cableCARD feeds, while not side-by-side, I would rather the 5570 personally, while the PQ was as close as I can tell to identical, frame rates were not as good, and my eyes are very sensitive to changes in frame rates, I can get used to a low frame rate just fine, but when frame rates shift up or down, the momentary judder bugs the ever-loving crap out of me.
So, from what I understand, VA de-interlacing is the best to use and now the 5570 can do this adequately?
Either 5470 or the 5570 can decompress and decode MPEG2 1080i content without problems and support output to 2 displays concurently. What I am not sure if is is the memory bandwidth of the 5470 enough to handle the higher processing requirements of decomnpressing and decoding H.264 1080p/24 or 1080i H.264 content. The much higher memory bandwidth of the 5570 may be required especially for the processing of the dual 1080p/24 H.264 streams on a 3d Blu-ray disk. Note the HDMI interface for cards to support 3D blu-ray also need to support HDMI 1.4 protocal.
I think the short of it is:

-5450 is enough if you are only watching progressive material (downloaded movies, blu ray)

-a 5570 is needed for perfect deinterlacing without postprocessing (a good example is 1080i broadcast tv)

-a 5670 is needed to enable perfect deinterlacing and postprocessing (better for upscaling interlaced material like standard definition tv and DVDs)

Does this sound right to you guys?

With the driver fix the 5570 is on par with the 5670 in those areas.
So anyone got one of these yet? Considering it but there is no fanless ones on newegg wondering how quiet they are with a fan.
