I have about $140 to buy a graphics card. I already own a PCI ATI-TV-Wonder card.

Should I buy:

1. Geforce 4 TI4200 64M with DVI/TV out for display and use the TV-Wonder for capture.

or

2. ATI ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 7500 64MB for both display and capture.

While I probably will play a game or two on the machine the 7500 doesn't seem too bad at graphics, more graphics power is appealing though. At present I'm on a non-HD 52" Hitachi Ultravision, but hope to get an HDTV within a year. What would I be happiest with? Is the S-Video out from the ATI that much better than the Geforce? Would I even notice it on a non-HDTV.

Hello,

you already have an older ATI All-in-wonder. What can you do with the newer ATI you cannot do with the older one?

When you buy a GF4 you can use it in the AGP port and still use the old ATI in the PCI port. Then you can use the GF4 for games and when you fell that you need the DVD or S-Video quality of the ATI you can still use the old one.

I have a GF 4 Ti 4400 and a Radeon PCI i my XP system and it works great.

When I would be forced to decide between the cards I personally would go for the GeForce. It's gaming power, stable drivers and accepable S-Video output is ok for me. And after some testing I cannot see a real differnce for DVD's when you use the NVidia DVD player.

I wonder if ATI realizes the confusion surrounding there naming of products. The ATI-TV-WONDER is not an ATI-ALL-IN-WONDER. For example, TV does not equal ALL-IN. The ATI-TV-WONDER is a capture card only. It has no S-video or VGA out. With that clarified I have an additional question.

Has anyone been able to get the ATI-TV-WONDER audio to work with Dscaler? I can get video but no audio.

If you are serious about using this machine to drive a hdtv the only choice is a radeon. The nvidia card will not even be close to the quality for dvd playback. Also keep in mind, while you can have 2 cards, one for games and one for theater, for some applications (dscaler) agp is required so your agp card needs to be the radeon.

If you plan on sticking with svideo then I doubt it matters much, but I have heard that the nvidia looks better.

Are you sure radeon is definitly better for dvd playback ?

I've changed my geforce for a radeon on my htpc, but

when i look at the new nvdvd player, difference between

geforce and radeon seems smaller and smaller...

So i'm guessing what should i do if i had to change again...

Now that I've read alittle more I've realized it would be pointless to use Dscaler with my capture card. Atleast as long as I'm using a non-HD TV. The TV will re-interlace the frames. I'll make sure I get a capture card that works with Dscaler when I get an HDTV. Maybe Dscaler will work with the TV-WONDER by then (Video works but Audio doesn't for NTSC).

What I ended up purchasing:

- ANTEC SOHO File ServerTower ATX Case Model SX1040BII with 400 Watt Smart Power (Dam this case is big/tall:eek: Didn't realize it was going to be that tall. I don't even have to bend over to put a dvd in.)

- Lite-On 16x DVD Model LTD-165 Black

- MITSUMI D359M3 BLACK FDD 1.44MB

- ASUS P4PE Motherboard for Intel P4 478 Retail w/ Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, SATA, Gigabit LAN, Firewire IEEE1394

- Intel Pentium4 1.8A GHz 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz

- ASUS V8420 Geforce 4 TI4200 64M with DVI/TV out

- ATI-TV-WONDER

Hello,

this is definitly a fact of the past.

I tested both, Radeon and GeForce cards and they are very close when you use the NVDVD player. You won't see a difference when you're not searching for. If you see one I bet of an misconfiguration of your GF card. You have to use the HWA mode for MX cards and the software mode for Ti cards.
