Atmos on Top Cabinet or with Rear Surrounds?

Due to layout issues, I have two options for the placement of Atmos add-on speakers: 1. On the top of my current entertainment center - about 3 feet above the TV (about 6 1/2 feet off the ground) or 2. in the rear with my surrounds. Any thoughts on the viability of doing either of these or would either placement destroy the Atmos effect? Think I know that I am SOL but hoping one could work. Thanks.
