I have received reliable information that Hughes will soon offer their own version of the upcoming DirecTV HDTV STB made by LG. It will be called the Hughes HTL-HD.

It should be identical to the LG & Sony versions below, with the exception of no RF remote.

LG LSS-3200A (ex-Zenith HD-SAT530) (DVI) Like 520, no QAM, simultaneous NTSC and HDTV output, IR blaster. Available November 2003.

Sony SAT-HD300 $750 (DVI) Like 200, no QAM, simultaneous NTSC and HDTV output, IR blaster. Available October 2003.

Looks like these manufacturers are putting all their marbles in one basket -- if this unit has problems, consumers will much fewer options for STBs. Hopefully LG has it right this time.

According to a source at D*, LG did a super job with the forthcoming LSS3200/HD300. With GM trying to close a deal with News Corp to sell D*, it is a good idea to not duplicate engineering. If LG did a satisfactory job, then so be it. Remember a couple+ years ago all we had was the Hughes E86 (and two rebadged versions) and the RCA DTC100.

Here we go agian!

The STBs are missing the one inportant connection that will connect them into a Firewire Home Network. With the Firewire connection its a NO SELL!

I can see you won't be buying many of the upcoming next-generation HD STBs. :)
