I just mounte a channel master 4228 in my attic and am getting excellent results. I am woried however that I have created a fire hazard. I have had past experience with lightning hitting my home and travelling through the roof ridge to a shop light mounted in the attic. Is this a rare occurance in general, or have I added a lightning rod inside my roof? If I add a ground wire, havent I made it more likely that lightning will find a path? I'm a touch confused, can anyone help?

There have been arguments before. The bottom line is that static electrical charges are built up by wind blown dust. It's like the old silk on glass rod experiment. Since the antenna is indoors, it will not build up a charge and begin the process that causes a lightning strike.
