Moved into a new house 3 weeks ago. I am now theaterless which is depressing. I actually traded houses with a friend of mine and he bought all my theater equipment and furniture because he liked the room so much. He left a decent setup in my new house consisting of a 63" Samsung plasma with an Onkyo tr600, bluray player and Cambridge soundworks 5.1 system with the big powered Newton 500 series Towers. Its OK for now.

Luckily I have a big, separate barn with an unfinished loft that will one day be a new theater. Anyway I was poking around the crawl space above the garage tonight and found a set of Bose 201 Series II speakers (manufacter date of 1984) and a set of Bose 501 speakers with a date of 1977 on them.

What can anyone tell me about these speakers? Isn't this back in the day when Bose was known for a good sounding speaker?

Bose claims to still be a great speaker. Of course you might wonder why they were left behind.

Bose has never been known for good sounding speakers. They have been known for extraordinarily good marketing. Their speakers are and have been atrocious. The 501 was awful. No detail, boomy base, truly about as bad as it gets. But the 201 was even worse; a wretched little boom box. You'll hear the difference as soon as you connect them and compare them with the Cambridge speakers.

I owned these in the 70's and if I recall, they were series II and powered them with either a Sansui or Hardon Kardon receiver. I enjoyed my time with them and eventually moved to the 901's with a Phase Linear 700B power amp. I moved on from them to a 3 way speaker and the rest is history to my present day setup of Dynaudio, etc. Anyway, I am sure those drivers would need to be reconed or replaced and it would not be worth the effort unless they have a retro appeal to you.

They should sticky this thread. This is priceless. Bose isn't even worth the cost to move them LOL. As mentioned Bose never really made anything great although there are a few posters who swear by a few models. Probably the most popular (and most polarizing) is the 901. Somehow Bose manged to dupe people into thinking this POS is a great speaker. Actually its easy to figure out how. Combine awesome marketing and stupid consumers and you have a legendary speaker. Amazingly, people (J6Ps) still consider them one of the best speakers available, granted its people who have no clue.

PT Barnum must have been a Bose customer.
