I'll be finally upgrading my receiver after 17 years.  I'm very slow to the party.  I'm buying a used, but in excellent condition, Sony STR DA3200ES 7.1 receiver.  This is a good upgrade for me, since my last receiver was a Kenwood 2 channel. I have a very limited budget at the moment, so I will be running a 2.1 set up for now.  I plan to go to 5.1 when money allows.  Here's my question.  Is it worth it to have the receiver do the auto calibration when all I will be using is 2.1 audio?  At the minimum I was going to set my front speakers to small, crossed over at 80Hz, and let the sub take care of all low frequencies.  But, what about full auto calibration?

Every time I change my setup I plug the mic in and at least do a 1 position routine because that tells the receiver what is actually connected. And it will set the distance, crossover, large or small, eq etc. Once it is done then you can experiment and decide what sounds best, depending on the source etc. I am only doing 2.1 also.
