As I was watching the race yesterday I would hear a "thump" sound about every five minutes or so in which the sound would drop for a half a second and my receiver would lose the 5.1 signal.

Does anyone else experience this? Could it be a reception issue? I am about 20 miles from the transmitter with an amplified antenna in my attic.

Any thoughts are much appreciated....

I've posted about this before too, and never got a response. I have the same problem with WTTG-DT, and always have. The occasional 1/2 second or so sound dropout you describe sometimes happens more frequently than every 5 minutes. It's definitely something about WTTG-DT, cause I've had the problem for a few weeks now, regardless of what program is on.

Actually, last night I wasn't able to get any sound AT ALL from WTTG-DT through my STB. This was while Malcolm in the Middle was on.

What STB do you have? I have the Samsung SIR-T150.

Thanks for the input. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem. Didn't watch Fox last night so I can't comment on other problems.

My tuner is integrated into my Mitsubishi TV, but I'm considering the Samsung when the dish offers more HD options. How is it? Right now I have a couple of SIR-T70s and they are OK.

I've never had a sound issue with WTTG-DT. I watched 30 minutes yesterday and the sound was flawless.

Don't be so quick to blame the station for what COULD be faults in YOUR set-up or equipment.

Same problem here in Detroit, Fox was messed up all weekend here. I'm sure it's not our equipment. Same problem in different states with different equipment. Hughes E-86! Fox is normally consistently trouble free for me.

Same problem with the Futurama, Simpsons, and Malcom in the Middle last night. No sound at all. This morning, perfect. And it's raining and windy this morning. I'm in Manassas, VA.

Weird.

I think it was Fox ditigal national, not WTTG because the previews for the local news had sound, just not the shows and national commercials. Pissed me off, had to watch Malcom and Oliver Been in 3:2 analog. I wish the digital and analog stations were in sync so I could watch the digital with the analog sound, but the digital is 1/2 sec behind!

Possibly, however whatever it is, it only happens with the sound from WTTG-DT.

My Denon AVR-682 receiver is one of the ones with the DD decoder chip that has a problem with the protection flag that messed up the sound on the Jurassic Park III, Pearl Harbor, and Atlantis DVDs. This was a major problem going around a little over a year ago with newly released DVDs. Onkyo, Denon, and Outlaw receivers had the problem, which manifested itself as audio dropouts whenever the flag (don't remember its name) was encountered in the DD audio stream. Eventually the problem was "solved" when Dolby made a software change to the audio encoder used by the studios to NOT include the offending flag.

My guess is that there's something in the Fox digital audio stream that some receivers (likely the same ones) do not handle properly. I've had this occasional sound dropout with WTTG-DT for quite awhile. I used to have the problem MUCH worse on some of the HD loops broadcast by PBS WMPT-DT as well, but lately that problem seems to have gone away.

Or it could be said this way......."My guess is that there's something wrong with my receiver's ability to process the "protection flag" on Fox's digital audio stream since other receivers like Yamaha do not exhibit this problem".

Or, one could say "rather than have Fox remove a flag that none of the other broadcasters seem to feel the need for, all of us out here without Yamaha receivers should throw them in the trash and eat a few hundred bucks, since obviously Yamaha receivers are vastly superior to everything else."

I have a Denon 3802 and never had a problem. I have noticed with multipath or other reception issues that you can lose audio but not video and vice vera. I also never had a problem with wttg psp or whatever its called but I have had some issues with other stations in pa that I receive. My issue is with ota all together, when it works great but I have other issues that p* me off with reception. I can not see the average consumer putting up with this kind of stuff, I guess cable will solve all of that eventaully. Jeff
