Audio output of the new formats?

701 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  WriteSimple
Has anyone seen any info about how the new Dolby and DTS audio format would be decoded? The way it sounds in order to listen to these you will need new surround sound processors. Or at the very least six channel analog inputs. If the new players have digital output what form will it take? I don't think the current coax and optical will handle this signal.

There are no set standards. It could be any form of DD or DTS, WMV audio, lossless, etc.
Lots of people are concerned about what the source of the PCM output is going to be (DD+, hurray it will be DD lossless, etc.) What isn't being talked about is what actually comes out of the box.

Since HDMI is HDCP, it may be the audio is encrypted to.

All this talk of breaking out the video for DVI+HDCP, and passing on the audio is damn confusing if the audio is a encrypted set of PCM streams. You'd need a HDMI compliant receiver to hear anything.

Is it possible for the video portion to be encrypted, but the audio be in the clear? Will a ENCODED stream be output on the traditional optical/coax digital output for a receiver to decode?

All of the BD and HD-DVD players will have the ol' flavor of coaxial and/or optical digital output. This can only handle regular DD and DTS formats but it also means you can listen to it using your current equipment.

I think for DD + and DTS HD, it'll just be either Firewire and/or HDMI. And for that you need a new receiver/preamp.

New surround sound will mean new decoding chips and I have not seen any manufacturer mentioning new or upgraded processors. The players may be out at the end of the year, but it may take another year to have something to decode that. I hope this does not become the SACD/DVD-A nonsense of 6 channel analog only.

You may be correct in regards to the time it takes for CE manufacturers to come up with the new (or old - it may not take much processing power to decode the new signal) chips. However it may take more parts if the sound goes from 6.1 discrete (like DTS ES Discrete - lossy but there ya have it) to 7.1 (SDDS format) to 8.1 (SDDS plus surround back) to 10.1.

What we would be suckered to do is buying BDs and HD-DVD with only DD 5.1/DD EX 6.1 matrix at 448 kbps and DTS ES Discrete 6.1 at 1586 kbps for the first-year releases and then double-dip to get the lossless version.

Either way, I think it's a good thing that we know now where the audio part is going.

I have been thinking about upgrading my audio system but I will wait to see how this plays out. I don't want fall into the trap of buy a player then having to upgrade 6 month later.

Well you can buy a universal player (SACD/DVD-A plus DVD-V) that has HDMI output, progressive scan up the wazoo... but I would advise that you wait on what the receiver/amp situation will be like. HDMI is the key.
