I just purchased an Onkyo receiver and I am trying to set up my HDTV audio so that I can use my Motorola (Comcast HD) remote volume control.

When I plug my component audio cables into the fixed output of the TV I am forced to control volume with the Onkyo remote. So I tried the variable output (of course with the TV speakers off)

I seem to lose a lot of volume and quality when using the variable outputs. Is this normal?

If I use the fixed output there is no way I can force my Motorola Comcast remote to always default to control the volumne on the Onkyo. This means I can change channels with the COmcast remote, but any time I want to adjust the volume I have to use the Onkyo remote or go through the hassle of switching the remote to control the receiver to adjust the volume then switching the remote back to contol the set top box to change channels.

First of all you should run the audio from the digital out from your cable box directly to your avr and control the volume with the avr and don't use the variable sound of your tv,I know it sucks but unless your cable box has smart sound option which keeps the volume level for all channels then you will have to live with it.

Thanks Lou!

'm not sure if it has smart sound. Is there a cable box available from Comcast that has smart sound. If not from Comcast, from somewhere else? I'm willing to do anything. (My wife is going to kill me!)

Consider this step of my set up closed. Through another post I was able to figure out how to program my Comcast remote to control the receiver at all times. I'm just beginning so I'll have to search posts for cable set-up recommendations.
