Audio setup question for new HT(naive questions)

408 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  rubs
Hi,

I recently bought a Sony HT-DDW660 and attached it to DVD player using provided coaxial digital cable.

1) Is this cable good enough or i need to buy good digital cable for this?

also i am attach it to cable box using optical digital cable and set it to AFD mode so that system should choose automatically

2) Is the AFD mode is good enough or i need to change to different type based on the program manually?

3) Do i need to change the speaker wiring or sub woofer wiring or it is good enough for this small size home theater?

4) What are the other good receommended settings for this player?

I am asking many questions but manual is not enough so i need the experts advice?

Thanks

rubs,

It would be helpful to have a link for your Sony, to know exactly what its provisions are. As it is all I can do here is give you a “best estimate†on some of your questions.
  1. If you’re getting sound using the cable that came with it, then you’re fine.
  2. Sorry, have no idea what “AFD†mode is. That’s where a link would be handy.
  3. Again, impossible to say for sure with the little information you’ve given us. Typically it’s never a bad idea to upgrade the speaker wire, but some budget systems have proprietary connection schemes that make that virtually impossible.

At least on my older Sony ES rcvr, AFD is automatic field detection, which basiclly switches between DD, DTS, PL and PCM as needed. How this works with my Direct tv rcvr is that it would auto switch to a DD signal if one was present, otherwise it would just pass the pcm stream and apply PL or whatever other soundfield I had selected

It's fine. It is digital audio, just make sure if you use optical you set to optical (OPT1), or coaxial digital audio cable set to VID1. Yes, set to find input automatically in AFD.

Leave in AFD. A DVD may be DD or DTS.

Depending on the length, 16 gauge, 2-conductor is fine. You could use 12 AWG, especially for the sub. As far as brands, copper is copper.

4) What are the other good recommended settings for this player?

Get the manual for the player as all brands and even model numbers within brands have differing settings. Sometimes a player will say set to PCM/Dolby Digital. Most agree to set the sub to "yes" or "on" and all small satellite speakers to "small". You may have a distance setting. Measure how far your speakers are to the listening position and set accordingly. Cinema C is a good sound-field, but it is subjective, a personal preference. Turn the treble up and the bass to what you like. If you use a SPL meter you will allow the sound in dB's to reach your ears more equally from each speaker with the supplies test tones, or a setup disc.

Thanks
