Hello all. I also think I need the forum's help.

Im currently using my PC (sony vaio that has a cd-r/w) to make cd mixes off CDs Ive converted to wav files. Im finding out that Im a bit of an audiophile and the mixes dont quite sound as good as the originals. I dont think my pc setup can do the DAE thing.

While I can always get an external reader/burner that can do DAE, Im considering getting a meridian 518. The 518 can do all kinds of mastering, etc. My interest is making my own compilations that are audiophile quality. Im very interested in the HHB and Tascam recorders, but Id prefer to not record 1 track at a time. I am wondering if you could provide any insight into how I could use my pcs hard disk as song storage and then if theres a way of going spdif into and out of the pc- this way I can go through the 518. I realize Id probably need a new sound card. Im sorry to give you all these newbee questions.

thanks in advance,

Jerry

Have you thought about getting a sound card that has a digital in port? Don't know if this will solve the problem but I recently spoke to someone about this and they thought that might be a solution. I think the company that was recommended was REM. Not the band. German I think.

I am sure there are others. Anyway as I understand it you would take the digital out of your player (assuming it is an off line devices) into the digital in.

These files created by digital in could then be written in any sequence. Adaptec makes a cd authoring program as does Sound Forge (CD Architect).

Chuck,

thanks for the info. I was referred to this company
www.sekd.com

how would the files get written (as wav or something else?) just curious.

it seems to me that my other option is just get an external drive that can do DAE (direct or is it digital audio extraction) like plextor and scsi card- this will also have the benefit of writing a cd-r in 6 minutes and is much cheaper (wondering if a 518 mastering unit is "necessary")

If what you want to do is copy files to a hard drive and later accumulate selected tracks to be output to a CDR youc an do that with Adaptec CD Creator Deluxe. If you want to clean up or process the sound then Sound Forge CD Architect has more options (more cost).

There may be differencs between various methods for copying but from what I have done they are slight.

I have heard that you want to avoid sending data through the sound card. So if you copy using one of the above ulitilies to a hard drive and then write it out to say a Yamaha external CD CDR CDRW device that would give the most flexibility and lower cost I think.

Computer grade blank CGR can now be had inexpensively, versus the higher cost cdr for "audio".

You can probably down load a demo version of either of these programs and try them out before you buy.

The Yamaha external drive is relatively inexpensively. The Adpatec cards vary in price if you do not already have one on your computer.

My little bit of testing makes me think SCSI devices for master seem to be a bit more relible than IDE devices.

I looked at the SEKD device and it looks interesting. If you are recording from discrete sources this sounds interesting. if you just want to master music you already have I think one of the above choices would be a closer fit.

Gentlemen,

thanks for the feedback- great info! Chuck, I got a very favorable deal on the meridian 518 processor- this lets me manipulate 2 channel pcm very well and then I can store the files on the pc for later more processing via the 518 and cd burner.
