Will any receivers maintain the same sound level when commercials come on? If so, what do they call this feature so I can make sure it's on the receiver I finally decide upon. Thank you for all that respond.

One answer is supposed to be "dialnorm" or dialog normalization.

Understanding dialnorm

I think it is included in all current Dolby Digital decoders and is ususally on by default. It is a little like suggesting a law against crime. It only works if others play along.

actually, the feature you are looking for is the DRC - dynamic range control.....

this feature basically lowers the loud sounds and brings up the soft sounds so you have much less dynamic range..... this will make the commercials' volume level closer to the level of the tv program you are watching.....

some receivers/prepros even have a feature called "midnight listening" - this applies maximum compression so you can watch a movie without waking the rest of the people in the house.......

cheers!

No, the answer is dialnorm. Furthermore, dialnorm and DRC only work on DD sources. No DD, no dialnorm and no DRC!

Kind of a big assumption that the commercials are transmitted as DD signals!

you are right..... DRC and dialnorm only work on DD and DTS signals.....

but the "midnight mode" works on many more sources (at least on my pioneer elite 55txi)..... and it effectively does the same thing as the DRC....

it raises the very quiet sounds and lowers the very loud sounds.....

cheers!
