Automatic rilfe fire ULF vs handguns and shotguns

2635 Views 64 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  blackoper
I am no gun expert, I've shot maybe 10 different guns in my life, maybe 15 I don't know. But why is an automatic rifle so different from the rest when it comes to movies and recordings? Shot guns and handguns seem more like explosions... a little bit of ULF but a lot of upper bass. Automatic rifles are the opposite, and what I love... a ton of ULF and very little everything else. Blurays, DVDs, Netflix, HULU.com, Youtube. I love it!

Sound effects in movies are 'effects'.

Go to the firing range. Try out several caliber weapons. Find a range that allows automatic weapons to be used. I live in California so unless I have a mountain range and an ex military friend, Im out of luck. So thats another reason to go to VEGAS!!

im learning on the same issue right now, I love the scene in book of eli where he is shooting his pistol (i think a 40 cal) and his sawed-off, and there are a couple auto's in there as well. the low "THUMP" i like to hear and heard on Tony's dts's just isnt quite there yet on my f-20's but i have a good feeling I can accomplish with a little low-end boost
i posted not too long ago tryin to find out if anyone knew the specific frequencies that gunshots peak (there should be several) so I could try boosting those to see what I got

One of many good reasons
LV Gun Store,...Been there, got the T-shirt.

My wife and I got the WW2 package, vintage 45, and a plastic German machine gun, and of course, the Tommy Gun,...had a blast. Went back to the counter and got a contemporary package, SAW M249, M16, something else,...then went back up and got a sawed off "Shorty", shotgun. Now, that's some percussive LF. A guy was firing it on the other side of the glass, and the HF filtered out left a wonderful concussive transient wallop, that was very, very cool.

Wifey and I love us some Vegas,....

Thats just it, if they are jsut effects, then every single movie and show that I see shouldnt follow the same continuum. Whether it's Inception, Prison Break, some movie I'm watching on flix now.... automatic rifles in all "fake effects' are the same frequencies for them. So how do they create these effects? Fire shots in a sound room doubling as a shooting range then just stick it over? Or during the actual scene do they shoot blanks and record the audio as is? I assume in small enclosed areas with no earplugs would cause damage... even with blanks.

50 cal is fun, Gattling Gun on The Last Samuri was the best I have ever seen heard or felt... unfortunately havent gotten to experience it with the new set up, what a shame.

Awesome! I go every January to Vega$ for CES. Went to one of the gun ranges for the first time this last year. Been meaning to do it for a long while but I just never got around to it. It will now be a for sure 'go to' each time I come to Vegas from now on. I've got a hat but no shirt and several vids of me shooting: M1A1 Thompson, Geasegun, Mp5k and Mac11.
Good times. I'll get some much better footage this next year.

I want to shoot the m249 sssoooooo bad. I want me a whole 250rd box though. Can't think of any other way to enjoy shooting a belt fed squad automatic weapon, imho. Gosh. Even your wife joins you for the fun. Man, you guys are luckier than you think.

There is an awesome extra on the Ultimate Edition of Terminator 2 where the sound designer goes over how they created the 'sound' of Arny's shotgun in the movie. That feature alone would teach you a lot on how these kinds of sound effects are made. Then do yourself a favor and rent or buy Heat. Watch the special features on that one. Guns sound wildly different from any other action movie. Why? 100% production audio.

i got one of those in my coat closet, its called the babykiller only because it is a baby shotgun, and is killer, duh...
Well I have never seen any of the Terminator movies, bits and pieces here as an adult... I was highly shielded as a kid so i couldn't watch rated R... now I make all these videos flipping my kid off with Wayne saying nasty stuff in the background. Nuture/Nature? Heat was cool, I'll have to hit that up again.

Babykiller. wow. lol!
Holy cow Mr. Powell! Nice build BTW! I am a Powell also

Yes, they will cause damage but they also don't have the powder charge of a regular cartridge and therefore aren't quite as loud.

If you want to "hear" the difference, watch the different shooting shows on the Outdoor Channel. Every firearm has it's own signature. Barrel, cartridge, powder, etc all impact this. For example, a NATO 5.56 round will not burn all of the powder before the bullet exits the end of a 16" AR-15 barrel. That means it is LOUD and in the late evening it gives you a great looking muzzle flash.

The mic on the camera isn't great but it gives you a good idea of the "crack" sound of a 5.56mm vs. the low boom of larger caliber weapons.

Yeah, I was just about to say the 5.56 pops/cracks. There's not much deep bass in it. LFE from any weapon I've shot is quite dismal in comparison to the >150hz stuff. Hell, the >1khz stuff still over powers the
So the movies are completely crap/fake, make it from the gorund up, or is it the EQing, severely boosting the low end and attenuating the high end?

for the most part, the movies boost that low-end a lot so you get the "feeling" of actually firing the weapon, even though you didnt.

I wish i still had Inception and The Last Samuri, then I'd make a video compilation with a few sceenes from Prison Break, the movie I watched ealier, then a few explosive scenes from the current movie and Children of Men. Funny how even though its all fake, they fake the same types of weapons the same. Just odd I guess. Some things are just odd.
