crittycakes,

If you look under the 'PMT' section of TSReader, you may be able to see if there are things that are encrypted. Sometimes they're "DC-II" encrypted on some carriers.

gumby1,

As topcats69 indicated, the remote control is not 'RF', so it must be within line of sight.

Some people like to use 3rd party programs like SageTV, WatchHDTV, BeyondTV, Media Center, or other programs. We certainly can't guarantee compatibility, though.

It would appear that the June 2007 cumulative update for Media Center for Windows Vista may address some of the "quirks" mentioned in this forum. Can anyone who has experienced problems and installed the latest update comment on whether Vista has stabilized, or whether we still have some ground to cover?

A summary of the update and download links can be found here:

support . microsoft . c0m / kb / 935652 /

Thanks!

I'm considering moving from Comcast cable TV to Verizon FIOS TV. I have FIOS Internet and am quite satisfied it's performance and reliability. FIOS TV will be about 20 bucks less per month for the same service I have with Comcast plus Comcast is moving the NFL Network (SD) to a new tier which will cost an additional 8 bucks per month. Verizon has the NFL Network in HD at no additional charge.

My question is, does anyone have FIOS TV and a GT? If so, does your GT get the local HD channels (2, 4, 5, 7, 25, 38 and 56)? My GT receives all Comcast local HD channels (splitter before the STB). If the GT cannot recieve FIOS local HD channels it would be a dealbreaker.

Thanks for any input...

I have recently been receiving the following error at software startup:

FILTER LOADING ERROR !

[USB HDTV Capture]

The HDTV driver is not installed or not connected!

This seems to be intermittent and usually solved with restart. However, the most recent event was after cold restart.

Could not locate solution in the OnAir FAQ. Only FILTER CONNECT was listed.

Another problem: I lost my entire Channel Manager recently. I spent several hours setting all the channel call letters and it worked perfectly for weeks. Then everything just disappeared. Required complete rescan. I'm on a stable Vista system and have done nothing to my computer of late.

I love the OnAir USB when it works but there simply seems to be a large number of little bugs and annoyances requiring constant tweaking and resetting. Or am I just over reacting? I simply want to watch TV/QAM on my computer while I work. I rarely even record or time shift. I suddenly miss my old All in Wonder 9700. I'm thinking of selling my 2 month old OnAir USB unit and trying something else. Any recommendations? The AverMedia PCI-e combo maybe? At least I could dump the powered hub requirement.

GreyWolf050,

I've seen a few customers in Technical Support with FIOS TV and their locals are unencrypted. However, I can't say if this is the case for every FIOS customer.

65Stang,

The error message you received indicated that the driver was not detected, or the device was not recognized. If you see these issues in the future, check that the blue LED on the device is still lit. You might try removing and reconnecting the device. In addition, check the device manager under "sound, video and game controllers" for the device.

Edit your scanned in channels to the same exact name TitanTV uses for them.

ie.. my GT scans in my local Fox HD channel as "WNYWDT" but TitanTV calls the same channel "WNYW-DT" so edit your scanned in name "WNYWDT" to equal the TitanTV name ""WNYW-DT" and your recordings from TitanTV will work correctly.

I just got my OnAir GT and have a problem with Titan as well. I changed my text as instructed on the Autumnwave site, but it still gives me an error that it can not find the channel. For instance, I labeled my Fox HD channel Fox HD. In the Titan guide it is labeled as KRIV-DT. I changed that and still no good. I then changed the channel # to match as well. On my tuner it is 92-2 and it is labeled 26.1 (27) in the Titan guide. Still no luck. I am using basic cable and receiving the QAM channels for free. I do pick up the HD channels, 12 total I believe, but can not use the titantv guide properly.

Brian,

You're on the wrong 'tab' on TitanTV's site. After logging in to TitanTV, you'll see 4 'tabs' across the top of the listings:

[My Favorites] [Digital] [Analog] [Cable] [Digital Cable]

If you're trying to get Digital TV on Cable working, you need to select the [Digital Cable] tab. (You were on the [Digital] tab, which is for Over-the-Air broadcasts.) Scroll down to the HD Digital TV stations to find 'KRIV-DT'. In Houston (Comcast), it is listed at channel 309. As long you have your Channel manager entry (92-2) named as 'KRIV-DT', it will figure out the rest.

Yes, you are correct Ryan. I was on the wrong tab and when I switched to the Digital Cable tab, all is good. I just have to get used to the new channel names. Is the remote that comes with the OnAir GT compatible with BeyondTV? I installed their trial version and it did not list the OnAir GT remote and I could not get it to work.

Thanks again, Brian

Brian,

You can make the OnAir remote work with just about any 3rd party program, as long as it accepts keyboard shortcuts. We already include keymaps for a number of programs. You can make your own keymap for BeyondTV by referencing our site:
Remote Control: Re-assigning the buttons

And... refer to BeyondTV's shortcut page:
Keyboard shortcuts

Has anyone been able to get Beyond TV to work with the OnAir GT? I can get the analog channels fine and I really like the interface, but it doesn't seem to support the OnAir yet. From what I have read so far it only supports the HD Homerun. Is this true?

I'm looking to buy the OnAir USB HDTV-GT, after ATI decided that my All-in-Wonder 9600 TV capture will not work under Vista. I'm real impressed by the GT from what I've read, but just have a few questions before I buy. (I'm sort of new to digital television/ATSC/QAM).

1. Does the GT work fully with Vista's Media Center?

2. Will the GT pick up analog and/or digital cable signals from my Cablevision connection?

3. Can I easily switch between digital OTA and digital cable?

Thanks for your help.

I don't have Vista, so I can't answer #1. Yes the GT will pick up analog and digital QAM signals from cable.

Switching from OTA to Cable requires a switch of RF connections. I use an inexpensive remote controlled A-B switch for this.

This is a long shot but I wondered if anyone had converted files recorded with either the Creator or GT to a format that the Nokia 770 could replay.

I have managed to transfer DVD's (3 minute test) to the 770 using a trial version of Media Studio 4 for Nokia and the results are good so I am considering buying this software.

Media Studio can also be used to convert avi, mpg, wmv, mp4, mpeg to the 770 format. HDTVtoMPEG2 did not work for me. I am not sure how a double conversion will turn out but I guess I need HDTV to one of the above. Thanks for any input.

Just to make sure SN125NY isn't misled, the GT will not display encrypted QAM signals, which is most of them on most cable systems. The only ones you're pretty sure to get are the local broadcast channels that your cable carries. It's likely that you'll also get a few others like cable tutorials, ads for VOD programs, etc. You probably won't get any other channels that you would actually watch, even if you subscribe to them, although some people report that they do. It's entirely up to your cable company what they do and don't encrypt, other than the locals, but enough people have clear QAM tuners now that the cable folks are being more careful about what they let out.

Brian,

BeyondTV doesn't support QAM for the OnAir GT. It only supports Digital TV (over-the-air), Analog (over-the-air) and Analog Cable.

We have bugged BeyondTV to add support, and have even given them some demo units (and code samples). They felt that if they added GT QAM support, they'd be 'opening a can of worms' and have to manage code for every QAM device out there.

SN125NY,

1. Vista's Media Center allows you to configure Digital (over-the-air) TV only. (Vista's Media Center does not support QAM, nor software encoders for Analog TV.)

2. The GT can pick up Digital & Analog TV signals (both Over-The-Air and Cable) through the OnAir HDTV Program, included on the install CD.

3. For the OnAir HDTV Program, it is an easy switch. Click the 'DTV(A)' tab for antenna, and 'DTV(C)' for Cable. You'd need to switch the input on the back of the device manually 'by hand', or with an AB switch like 'knnirs' has.

Very true, it depends on the cable company. 2 years ago, Comcast down here used to let EVERY cable channel through the clear QAM. So one could have subscribed to $11 a month basic cable and get all the channels included with the $46 expanded basic package(I'm guessing at 2005 cable prices) They stopped this when they finished the AD simucast conversion, and encrypted nearly all of the channels. However, they haven't changed any of them since then, which was late 2005. I get about 8 channels in the clear, Comcast doesn't seem to care about those random 8 channels. One of these channels is ESPN Classic, which you can't get via cable in my area, but it's sent via QAM in the clear! All it takes is adding a channel to the cable box guide tables, it's already being sent and taking up bandwidth...

I don't think they care anymore, they got most of them encrypted, and so few people are like me, who have limited basic and can get those channels w/o paying for them, via my QAM tuners on my HDTV and my OnAir.

That's too bad Ryan. QAM is what it is all about. The default software that comes with the OnAir GT is functional, just not real fancy. The Beyond TV and Sage TV (same owner?) have a much nicer interface and I would like one of them to be compatible with the OnAir GT. It is sad to say, but I am tempted to send it back and order the HDHR that is compatible. I'm sure that is not music to your ears or your company's, but compatibility is the key. If I was guaranteed that one of them would do an update, I would be glad to keep it.

Brian,

SageTV should work (QAM, Over-the-Air, Analog TV) with the OnAir GT. BeyondTV won't do QAM with the OnAir GT. (SageTV and BeyondTV are not owned by the same company.)
