Is it possible to connect a macrovision-free dvd player using the input jacks on the rear of the RCA UTV unit to watch a DVD through it?

Hi,


If you'd like to capture some clips to attach to your WEBTV/MSNTV e-mail that would be fine.


However, that is all you'll be able to use the AV inputs for on the UTV.


They do not work like an RF Converter... If you want that you'll need a... VCR with AV inputs or a RF Converter...


A big misconception by users and some sales reps who don't know any better...


I was orignally told I could record from them to the UTV Hard Drive... that isn't true either...

We really need to make this question a sticky. I think this crops up about every other week (blame poor technical info on MS, RCA and Sony's part). Maybe we could put together a UTV FAQ that will answer questions like that and can stay at the top of the list. Just a thought.

I'll start on it and (to keep it from being a long, meandering thread) people can PM me with suggested FAQs. I can edit the original post as more stuff comes in. It will take a day or so to research answers and get a decent FAQ started. Hopefully it can be made a sticky so it won't disappear when the updates slow down. I'll definitely need help with multiswitch information as I am not very familier with them.

Hmmm, let's see ... I can think of a few questions that belong in a FAQ:


o Can I add a second drive?

o Can I add a USB drive?

o Can I use my DSL or Cable-Modem ISP?

o Can I use the input jacks as passthrough or to record from?

o Can I put in a drive bigger than 137 GB?

o I have two UTVs (or I have an UTV and a RCA HD box) -- how do I stop the remote control from operating them both?

o How can I tell what version of software I have?

o How can I tell how much (free) space I have? [Answer should be both hours and %.]

o How do I control the "compression" setting used?


That should be enough to get started. I'm pretty sure I've seen each of these more than once.

I have my own web server, so I could host it myself if needed, but I'd rather keep it here if possible for easy access.

Just to let you know, I haven't given up on the FAQ. I just have been busy with a lot of overtime ans haven't had time to work on it. I posted a request in this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=248524 to have people list the model and LBA numbers of their drive so I can add "what drives work for upgrading my UTV?". Feel free to PM me if you have any suggestions for FAQs.


I'm also looking for info (as mentioned above) about hard drives (LBA and model numbers, jumpers on or off and how loud or hot), multiswitches (how to hook them up to the various types of dishes - 1,2 or 3 LNB - stacking, when splitters can be used with them, etc.) joining the beta program (if there is another round), as well as the steps to upload a picture or video clip to MSN (I haven't done it yet, so I don't really know.).

is there really such a setting within the UTV? searched the forum for an answer but have not found anything.

I included that particular question for the FAQ because in the past, some people moving from a non-satellite PVR routinely asked how they could select the compression on a UTV, like they could on their old PVR. The short answer is, "you can't". The UTV records the satellite signal as is. The compression ratio/factor is set by DTV.


On another subject ... the AVS search engine is really beginning to bug me. I find it just about impossible to find postings that I know are there. Seems like no matter what terms/options I use I get back "no matches" or hits that aren't the ones I was looking for.

thanks for the reply. bummer though. when i read that I thought maybe there was some hidden setting i didn't know about that acts the Tivo quality of the recording setting. would be cool feature.

last search i made i got a message back that the search has been shut off due to server volume....

Yeah, I was looking for the list of UTV codes someone had posted quite a while back and couldn't find them. At least now they've been re-posted so I can add them to the FAQ (or at least the most needed ones).
