AV Receiver suggestions

633 Views 24 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  skylarlove1999
I am creating a home theater room and would like some suggestions on the best 'bang for the buck' AV Receivers. I am looking to spend between $300 - 400 on one (I like nice sound but unlike my friends it doesn't have to be the 'ultimate') ..which is why I'm at that price range. I will be using this in a 22' X 25' room for a projector (Optoma UHD 60), with FIOS and a PS4. I will be probably using a 5.1 or 7.1 setup. I don't mind getting a model that is a year old if it's highly rated in that price range. Speaker suggestions for the same price range would be appreciated too. Thanks!

Denon X1500H for $300.
Second the Denon suggestion. In case you have not looked here before, check Accessories4less..

For bang for your buck these speakers and subwoofer cannot be beat. Probably have to buy them used.

$400 total budget for five to seven speakers to properly fill that size room just isn't realistic but the Energy Take Classic 5.1 that I mentioned will adequately do the job for now until you are able to allocate more funds for your speakers. You could still use them for your surrounds even after you upgrade your LCR.

Yeah...those look awesome but are a little out of my price range. As I said I don't need the high end ...just the best for what I can afford. I would assume there have to be some speakers for $300 that are better than others. I have speakers already for my living room but compared to those I'm sure these are cheap ones.
That Denon x1500 is hard to beat at 300-350. For speakers take a look at the Boston Acoustic's A26 and A25's. Great sound for the price. Buy one get on half off at accessories4less

I sent you a private message about speakers. It might be helpful.

you don't state what your speaker budget is...
as for speakers... do-able, more or less...

Monoprice: from 179 - 249 : https://www.monoprice.com/category/audio-video/speakers/home-theater-speakers-systems

Parts express: from 129 - 539 : https://www.parts-express.com/cat/home-theater-speaker-systems/93

best budget bet from above: https://www.parts-express.com/dayto...aker-bundle-with-8-powered-subwoofer--300-703... (although the sub is on the smaller side) swap out the surrounds for cheaper set and up the sub to stay closer to budget target.

Fluance elite + 100 sub: https://www.amazon.com/Fluance-Surr...peakers&qid=1567827533&s=gateway&sr=8-25&th=1

better: 3 x NHT super 1 (104 each at amazon) + 100 sub... monoprice/dayton + 30 - 50 / pr surrounds ( monoprice/dayton) if the 3rd bookshelf doesn't for the center, the matching center is 129...forgoe the surrounds until budget permits.

good luck

Well, I would flip that, and get a used receiver from Craigslist (where are you located?), watching patiently. My buddy saved literally $1000 when I found him a few-year-old Denon 2312Ci. Owner sold it for $100 because it didn't switch 4k video...who cares, we wire direct to the display anyway.

Spend more money on the speakers, which are really the linchpin of the system. More money spent on a receiver affects the sound far far far less than the speakers. I'd also advise starting with 2.0 or maybe 2.1 then expand to 3 & 5 & 7 channels over time as you can save up. Used speakers are also fine though I wouldn't buy anything like 20 years old due to technology improvement. [EDIT: though these things https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-b652-air-6-1-2-2-way-bookshelf-speaker-with-amt-tweeter-pair--300-651 have a fine reputation, and for $44 a PAIR (!!) you might scoop some just to make sound in the rear.
you don't state what your speaker budget is...
I think he meant $300-$400 for five speakers total. Same as the receiver budget.

If you need something right away, go for the Denon 1500H on accessories4less.com. If you can wait, Denon AVRs go on sale regularly and you can pickup an older better model for about the same price (especially at Black Friday)

For your speaker budget does that include a subwoofer? If so, get the Sony Cores and a BIC sub. If the subwoofer is separate, get the NHT Super Zero Ones plus the best sub you can afford. Your large room will need it.

Another option to consider for budget setups and/or large spaces... look for budget PA speakers. Go to a guitar center, musicians friend, sam ash, etc...

There are plenty of options that could fall into the budget, for example: LCR: https://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/peavey-pbk-12-full-range-12-2-way-passive-speaker...and if you look at the used stuff, even more bargains can be found.

, look for Rockville...beringer, gemini, monoprice

On ebay...

Focal 5.1 setup also available at Crutchfield. Better customer service and return policy.

Should I be worried those speakers are so small? Filling up a 22' X 25' room.

Yes but that comes with the budget. You can always try them out and return them if not satisfied.
