OK, I currently have a HK 247 receiver that does not have the latest firmware update to handle 1080p pass through and 24p capabilities. I confrimed this recently when trying to watch a Bluray with 24p set to on and my Xbox 360 not outputting correctly when set to 1080p.

I just got a new Samsung plasma 1080p 50" display with 24p capabilites and obviously want to use those features. I am afraid of upgrading my HK receiver with the firmware update due to the horror stories on here of bricking the receiver or just not getting the firmware to update correctly (sounds like a headache).

I need the receiver to have preouts as I am powering my fronts and center with separate amps. I also need flawless pass through of 1080p and 24p signals and the ability to play 7.1/5.1 LPCM audio decoded from my PS3.

I am hoping to get something used on craigslist or ebay for around $200 to $300.

Any ideas, I was thinking Onkyo 576? Thanks!!

You need to take the risk and upgrade the HK 247 receiver. It is an awesome receiver sound quality wise. I went from a Denon to the 247 2.5 years ago and was floored by the sound quality. The horror stories are coming from people making mistakes while upgrading. Just use a built-in serial port instead of USB to serial adapter and a good serial cable and you will be fine. Or get the HDMI splitter from ebay for $50. If your receiver still plays the audio fine with video set to 24Hz then the splitter will work for you.

It's going to be hard to find HDMI 7.1PCM/24p support and pre-outs for under $300, since most entry-level units do not have pre-outs (and older HDMI receivers may not support 24p passthrough). If you can stretch a little bit, the Denon 988/2808 model can often be had for under $400 on the used market, and it will do everything you want. You could probably also find the previous year's 987/2807 model but I'm not 100% that it will do 24p passthrough....

I bet you could also find an Onkyo 70X model for around $350-400 too.
