Hi, I haven't done a ton of homework on this yet, but I currently have a Yamaha RX-V995 (10 yrs old) w/ a pair of Polk M60's and CS1 Center. I have the opportunity on CL to purchase a used AVR-354 for a really good deal and am wondering if it is worth the investment. I know there are new audio decoding, and yes, I have bluray (Samsung BD-P1590), but my Yamaha has been great, and still is. I'm just wondering what people's thoughts are. I also have a Samsung 46" LCD.

Thanks,

If you're perfectly happy with your Yamaha, I wouldn't do it. Lossless TrueHD and DTS-MA audio is nice but even the compressed Dolby Digital and DTS coming from Blu Ray is a higher bitrate than standard DVD so it sounds very very good.

I have a 2004 HK receiver with no HDMI in my bedroom and have no interest in swapping it out for a HDMI receiver. It works well, sounds good, and I only watch 3-4 movies a month so its not worth it to me. Besides, like I said earlier standard DTS and DD 5.1 sound excellent from Blu Ray using the optical output.

Plus before pulling the trigger on the 354 you may want to read the owners forum. This receiver has a lot of bugs that can only be fixed by firmware updates. Not sure if you want to go thru all that.

Its a very nice sounding receiver though and I believe it also comes with an ipod dock. Just weigh all your options first.
