I am trying to troubleshoot a home theater problem for my father-in-law who lives 2000 miles away. Since I cannot go to his house and set it up for him, I am trying to guide him through it over the phone and I have a question that I was hoping someone here could answer.

My question is this:

If you connect a DVR to an HDMI equipped reciever via component, and an HD DVD player via HDMI, do you have to make both a component and an HDMI connection to the TV from the reciever or will it pass the component signal it recieved from the DVR to the TV via HDMI?

It depends on the receiver. If the receiver has a video scaler then the DVR should be upscaled to HDMI. You should not need to connect the component and HDMI cables both to the TV. The HDMI should be all you need.
