hi has anyone successfully output 5.1 to a mix of powered speakers and passive and hdmi for the center channel?

or is it even possible to mix this way?

thanks ☺

It's possible. You just need the right AVR with preouts (at least for the L/R in your case) as well as powered speaker terminals.
It looks like you're not planning to run a center channel and relying on a speaker built into the projector? If so, I'd advise against it, as the center channel speaker is probably the most important in a surround setup, and I'd imagine that there are compromises when fitting one into a projector. There should be numerous affordable options that could outperform the UST speaker.

Additionally, if the audio to the projector is relying on HDMI as opposed to a preout, it may not work, as the AVR may only want to send audio to the sink (the projector) or internally, not both.

The least expensive option to buy new that has L/R preouts is probably the Costco-only Yamaha TSR-700 (clone of RX-V6A).

I actually found the wemax a300 ust speaker extremely clear, just the sound stage is very limited

reason why I did not want to get a Center speaker is for aesthetic reasons… the ust is already occupying a huge chunk of the center and adding another center speaker seems redundantly ugly lol 😂

I have everything matching now, trying not to ruin the look with a big ass center channel speaker and not use the built in speakers of the UST projector itself

Check if the projector has an analogue in for the “center” it can use. HDMI center sound will be problematic most likly. (Its made for people to not be able to do what they want)

(You should pull the speakers forward so they dont have a big hard flat surface in front of them messing with the sound)

Hmm it has this AV input... not sure if that could work... hmmmmmm

Very good advice.

@Zhang Xinglong : Position speakers at (or slightly over) the leading edge of the entertainment unit to reduce unwanted acoustic reflections.
If the AVR has a preout for the center channel, it should work. Otherwise, is the SPDIF an input or output?
You could also try an HDMI splitter, sending one to the projector and the other to the AVR

I bought the speaker elevator angle up a bit alraedy... it slightly improved the sound lol.. very slightly... lol

the Projector cannot select a secondary source audio... so it has to be through the HDMI itself...
Going by the picture in post #6, the projector supports ARC, not eARC, so you can get DD audio to go back to the AVR, but I imagine you want to get better audio into the AVR and repeated to the projector for the speaker to play.

It looks like the AVR either needs to be able to play audio to the AVR and the display, or a 2nd HDMI output

The picture in post #6 shows what looks like a 3.5mm input for stereo. Is that not the case? Does the AVR have a preout for the center channel?

I suppose The arc would come into play if i try to do
Apple TV4k> PROJECTOR > AVR
if i do this, i have to select audio output HDMIARC, then the projector wont have sound.

By all logic if possible it should be:
Apple TV 4k -> AVR -> PROJECTOR

so far i asked a few like sonos, denon, none could select HDMI as center channel output
Looks, like if you are lucky you might get full sound out of the “center” + full sound from the system with a phantom center so it will be like 2 systems playing at once, not a good thing and probably likely to also include synch issues.
You should probably do without a center speaker or buy one but not use the projector.

What happens if you connect a 3.5mm source into the AV Input jack? Can you select that as audio for the projector speaker?
If so, you can get an AVR with preouts and send it in from the center channel. The risk is that there will be a lack of synchronization from the HDMI audio.
Past that, it looks like you need an HDMI splitter, but the same sync risk exists
The AVR may be able to make up for it with room correction.

I think you'll end up having to get a center channel. A slim/flat one like a KEF T101C or T301C may do the trick visually if placed under the screen, but will reflect sound off of the projector and console.
Sonically you'd want the projector resting on top of a beefier center (you'd have to raise the screen) with the woofers at the edge of the console. In fact, you want to move the L/R speakers up to the edge also.

It may be better to just leave the center channel out and run 4 channel. You should definitely either elevate the front speakers (maybe look at angled risers like these, not sure what's available local to you but maybe try it with books first) and/or or pull them forward from the wall, though, it could improve the sound a lot.

yup i say the sony hta9.... does just that phantom center.... seems promising.... not sure how big the sattelites they use inside... https://www.sony.com.sg/electronics/sound-bars/ht-a9#product_details_default

hmmm... interesting.... let me go sexperiment with this...

lol thats what i am trying to aviod doing.... putting another center will make it look so ugly lol
I get it, but otherwise there may be no center channel (but that's OK in some setups).
Hopefully the AUX input works.
