Am i thinking about this correctly? I have saving $'s to buy a network capable AVR ala Elite VSX-94txh or Onkyo TX-NR905, but came to the conclusion that i can actually buy a lesser priced AVR and get as an accessory input a wireless network media player such as a D-Link DSM-520 which would in the end give me network capability and still cost less than my original target AVR.

Perhaps. Most receivers with network capability are a bit pricey.

You can certainly make that decision my doing some accounting

I should note that the Yamaha receivers with network capability are a bit clunky. On the other hand, Squeezebox seems pretty sweet.

Squeezebox looks nice! However, the unit from D-Link and some others like it,also play video files and youtube as well as music and pictures. At this point,i am going to wait a couple weeks to see what new AVR models are announced from various manufacturers at CES and see if it will affect prices of AVR's presently available.
