I have to admit that I was VERY underwhelmed. The entire middle of the movie was very slow and rather dull. The beginning and end both were rife with action. This trilogy reminded me of the Matrix. The first one was amazing, the second had it's memorable moments, and the third lost it's way.

what are you talking about. The HP movies have always been nightmaric. I groaned at the first. Slept through most of the second. Was forced to watch the 3rd because of my wife and tried to see the 4th because it was supposedly darker, laughed myself silly at it. JMO though. Spidey actually wasn't that bad. It wasn't nearly up to the level of the first 2 but still a decently fun movie. Pirates 3 I'm gonna go see it in a few hours.

I hated the last Matrix film and thought Pirates 3 Was awesome! This movie has the best special effects I have ever seen. They were jaw dropping to say the least.
I personally preferred this third (and hopefully final) installment in the PotC series over the second one (The first being my favorite). It was darker, had a more complex and interwoven plot, plenty of action, and a little twist to the ending. I agree with Stryker that it got a little slow at times with all the dialogue but I wasn't put off by it. Felt necessary. The thing I didn't like about this one that was also my complaint about the second was the excess of "stupid" scenes with Jack Sparrow. In Dead Man's Chest it was the whole Jack as the tribal leader on the barbecue spit escape scene and later the sword fight on the water wheel. This one had its share of "Silly/Stupid scenes with Jack". I understand and enjoyed the "comic relief" aspects of the original but they went overboard (no pun intended) in DMC and AWE.
I didn't have many problems with the 2nd pirates film but the 3rd was great fun. Not a perfect movie but a movie full of adventure, amazing action and special effects and a solid cast giving you one last go(though I hear depp and gore verbinski already agreed to come back for a 4th if the script is good enough). Also stay after the credits unlike the first two the epilogue is worth waiting for this time.
The special effects were indeed amazing, however I just felt that the story was very weak.

Saw it last night...enjoyed it.
I liked it much better than the second. Not nearly as much as the first. It drags in the middle, but the first 45 minutes are wonderfully strange, and the finale is incredible.
It's good enough.

Maybe I am just cynical in my old age but is it possible that people are basing their reviews more on where they stand with the HD Format Conflict and less on the actual movie?
It feels like everything HT has been tainted for me.

I'm sure that's the case for some, but I never owned the POTC movies on any DVD, but I bought the Matrix films as they were released one by one.

That was not really directed at you, just more a thought created by your post.
I saw Matrix at the theater and never again nor the sequals. I do my best to avoid Keanu Reeves films, although he did a good job in Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure.
I do enjoy the POTC films. I was awed by the special effects in the second one but was in the middle of walking pneumonia when I saw it so was not focused on the story. I will watch it in HD tonight.
For a balanced HD post, I really like Serenity!

If you loved serenity I hope you watched firefly as well. Honestly Firefly is one of the best sci fi shows ever and it is only one season(which says a lot).

I really wanted to like it...but I didn't. The first film ruled (and the Blu-Ray is awesome), but this one was laugh out loud bad (much worse than the second).
