AX100 vs AE900

Hello all:

About to celebrate my 15th wedding anniversary and the Mrs. wants to get me the projector I've been longing for. My question is:

Assuming ambient lighting is not an issue (our HT room has no windows), do you think the AX100 is worth the $500 premium over the AE900? I see that Costco has the AE900 back up on their website, with the rebate running to October 31.

Thanks.

The answer to you question is obviously a subjective one. The 100 currently costs about 33% more than the 900. It's unlikely that a new model will provide for a 33% improvement in picture quality. But many people are willing to pay twice the price for 10% more, so to each his own. One thing is fairly certain...if you wait a few months the 100 will most likely have the same rebate.

Well said. Somebody has to pay for the R & D that went into the new design. Early adopters with the ' I want it now' fever fit the bill.

I'm more interested in how this PJ stacks up against the Pearl, a highly touted SXRD from Sony retailing for five Gs. Who knows, it may look like a bargain going head to head.

AX 100 $2000

900 $1350

$650 diff = 48% more

Not 33% more!!
Parksar, I recently upgraded from the AE900 to the AX100 and I'm extremely happy with the decision. The AX100 produces a very very bright picture yet the black level is comparable to the AE900. Even at Eco-mode the picture is still very bright to me. My room is light controlled and it's dark. I'll post a more detailed review at the AX100 thread later.
I saw the 100 at Cedia and the only difference I saw between it and my 900 was the brightness. If you have a good room, I say get the 900. Also, you can get the 900 from Costco which is a huge advantage with there service policy.

As far as the Pearl, it is clearly in a different league from what I have seen of it compared to the Panny's. Like I said, I own the 900 and I saw the Pearl at Cedia on a verry similar size/type screen to the one I have my 900 on at home. There is simply no comparison. For one, no VB on the Pearl which is huge in my mind. Both my 900 and the 100 I saw had the same VB, and it is distracting to me. 1080p vs 720p was a noticable improvement as well. I dont know if it was the resolution exactly or the higher fill factor of SXRD, but the picture was much cleaner and fuller without having to use smoothscreen. The Pearl should be better though as it is in a different price cat. One advantage to the 100 though over the Pearl is brightness. It is a much brighter projector if you have a large screen, non dedicated room, or simply want more brightness. However I did notice that this additional brightness made the VB stand out a bit more to my eyes which some may notice, some may not.

The 900 overall is a great bang for the buck projector and I am sure you will love it. Even with the issues I have had, it has provided lots of great moments over the past 6 months. If you need more brightness, go for the 100.
