Axiom's - Bad/good/great? $4K range

1351 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  nostatic13
So I'm looking to replace my Paradigm's (the mini-theater set). They sound okay, but I think I've outgrown them. They are loud and clean, but I don't feel the depth of sound I'm looking for.

I mostly use the room/speakers for TV viewing, mostly HD, lots of SciFi, Drama, Action. Also love music (Pop and Classical, video concerts), but don't listen to that as much as I watch TV (probably 80/20%). Also have an XB360 and PS3 in there, which get some use (not a ton).

I have a 7.1 system, all the little Paradigm's except the little Sunfire sub (bought it for $800 a long time ago - has treated me well). Dedicated HT room (about 12'W x 15'D), 110" Stewart screen, Sony Black Pearl, Onkyo 905.

The Axiom's seem like high quality speakers for about half of what I'd expect to pay.

Couple of questions:

1) Are they bad/good/great speakers for the price?

2) For ~$4-5K, can I get much better for a 7.1 system? (I think the site spec'd out M80's x 2, QS4's x 4, their main center and the super big sub).

Any other thoughts?

Please be patient with me... I'm just sticking my toes in the speaker-waters again after quite some time (I bought the Paradigm's with no research).

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark, welcome back.

The problem with your question is the responses you will be getting will be opinions. And for every opinion offered, if you'll just wait a minute, you'll get an equally opposite opinion. In the end, the only opinion that matters is yours.

That being said, I'm a former Axiom owner, and was very happy with them (it's a long story), and still think highly of them.

1.) In my opinion, they are great speakers for the price, but that's no guarantee you'd feel the same. Other's don't care for them.

2.) Again, the problem is, "better" is a subjective conclusion. Some will say no, some will say yes. My "better" could be your "worse."

Listening any speaker under consideration is the only way for you to know if you'd be happy with them. May I suggest that you wander over to the "Hearing Things" section of the Axiom forum, and check the first thread ("Auditioning Axioms In Your Area") to see if there is anyone near you willing to demo their speakers. If you don't see anyone on the list, you might start your own thread explaining where you are and asking for a demo. If that fails, email Amie ([email protected]), and ask her if there is anyone not listed that might be able to give you a demo. Often she is able to do just that.

Also, if you'll start a thread in the "Home Theater" section of the forum which includes all the info about your budget, your room, etc., you'll likely get some tips from the members which might save you some money like buying from The Factory Outlet which can save you 10%. Also, buying 5 items at a time will get you an additional 5% off.

Remember, in the end, only your opinion matters, and nobody here can predict whether you'd like the Axioms or any other speaker system.

I have not heard the Axioms, but I have heard the Paradigm Studio series.

From what I have read, the Axioms are on the bright side, as well as the Paradigm Monitor series.

So IMHO the Axioms are close to the Monitors and the Studios are a better sounding speaker. For the sub, you can't beat the SVS Ultra 13 right now for about $ 1400.

Yeah, unfortunately I figured as much... I was hoping there was some consensus on really good speakers in the $4-5K range... At least one or two brands/models/etc.

So what other brands/sets in this price range should I even be considering? Everything else that I run across (with very cursory glances) looks like it will cost me close to $10K for a full 7.1 system?
Front Axiom M50s

Center Axiom VP100

Rear Axiom QS4

Sub: SVS PB10-ISD

Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1014

This is a value/budget system. I LOVE it. Have heard many "higher end" systems that fail to compete. Axiom makes great speakers. Crisp, clear and balanced. Might go without saying but room acoustics and system tweaking are as important or more important than speaker selection.

Well I'll follow standard procedure and recommend the speakers I own which are Rockets from ********** . The RSC200 "Bigfoot" center channel is the best I've ever heard. If you'll click on "Products" at the top of the page, and click on "Speakers," you'll see some other av123 offerings that you might consider.

Also:

Aperions I've not heard them personally, but I've heard good things about them.

Ascend I've heard the Sierra's and was impressed by them.

Swans from The Audio Insider Also, take a peek at the Dana's as well.

In your range there are options that will blow Axiom away.

Paradigm Reference Studio, maybe Signature Series ( www.paradigm.com )

Monitor Audio Gold Series ( www.monitoraudiousa.com )

PSB Synchrony, maybe Platinum ( www.psbspeakers.com )

Dali Ikon ( www.dali.dk )

Joseph Audio Signature Series ( www.josephaudio.com )

Usher ( www.usherspeakers.co.uk )

Salk Sound ( www.salksound.com )

Aperion ( www.aperionaudio.com )

Subs from SVS, and HSU.

AH! another opinion.

In that price range my short list would be Salk Sound, Dana, and Dali. ymmv.

I'd rather go 5.1 with better mains than 7.1. But I listen to a fair amount of music in either 2.0 or 2.1.
