b&k reference 50 series 2 preamp - optical or analog?

My dad recently bought a b&k reference 50 series 2 preamp. I'm trying to figure out if it is worth it to go from optical to analog for HD DVD and Blu-Ray movies. He currently has a A30 and using optical and I'm not sure if I upgrade to a A35 and use the analog will the sound be any better?

So optical or analog on the b&k reference 50 series 2 preamp.

Optical will not give you the higher bit rate codecs. So go analog.
Does the preamp support the higher bit rate codecs?

No, you need HDMI
Does the pre-amp do pcm multi-channel? The alternative to using hdmi. (not sure if this makes sense)
The current players only do multichannel PCM over HDMI or analog outputs. If you use the analog inputs on the receiver you will have all channel information from the player as analog. If the player had a volume control you would not need the pre at all.
Is the $150 dollar difference in upgrading worth it for the multichannel pcm? Is it a much better experience?
