B&W 5.1 to 7.1 Speaker Setup opinions

I know I could have posted this in the B&W thread, but this is really more of a general question. It may even be a dumb one, but here it goes.

For years my 5.1 setup has been

604's S2 Front

CC6 Center

AS6 sub

601's rear

Just bought a new Denon 3808CI that I have had a few weeks now

So I'm basically new to the 7.1 setup.

I added a pair of B&W 686 which is a smaller speaker than the 601 and so far have been using them as the Side Surround.

Is this correct or should I be using my 601's as the Side Surrounds and the 686 as the surround back? Does the size difference of the surrounds even determine where they should be located?

I know I could swap them and listen for myself, but before I go through the hassle of swapping I wonder if it would even be worth the trouble.

the 686 is the newer line up ? I would put those for channels 6&7

I'd much rather use the 601's for your 4&5 set up,due to it matches the rest better.Same year line up,no?

Yes the 686 is from the current lineup

The 601 CC6 and AS6 are from the same year while the 604's are a series 2 from that same model line.

I ran out of patients trying to hunt down another pair of used 601's to add at a reasonable price. When I did locate them I couldn't bring myself to buy a pair of used 601's at the same price or more than what I paid for mine brand new. So a Spent a little more on some brand new 686's which I thought were the current version of the 600 series.

I'm assuming when you say Ch 4&5 you are referring the Side surrounds.

Yes, 601's for the side and the the 686 for the rears
