Moving into a new house and need to consider ideas for a baby monitor. The house was built in 2003 and does not currently have any structured wiring save for Cable.

Requirements:

Need to monitor one room for audio primarily at this point. The option to upgrade in the future to video would be nice.

Need to be able to portably monitor sound if I am working in the yard, basement or another room where there is no TV/audio available.

I plan on slowly trying to wire this house for futur whole house audio and video, but this is a current need and thought it might be something i would want to consider wiring for now that could be expanded and incorporated into future Whole House AV distribution.

With the requirements that I have, am I better off just getting an off the shelf portable monitor or is there a better solution?

Thanks

We have a wireless black and white video monitor w/ audio that was handed down to us that works pretty well. The rooms are only about 10' apart though. We also have a remote wireless audio-only monitor that is able to get good reception outside and downstairs. I would think that a wireless solution would be fine for you.

Buy the 'cheap' baby monitor now, because it will take a while to figure out the hard-wired option.

Do you want your kids growing up with cameras in their bedrooms?

Wireless installed (on-wall or flush-mounted), and wired installed options are available.

Search Amazon for 'intercom' to see some wireless, wall-mounted options.

Go with an affordable, cordless audio monitor. You may find you don't need anything at all for kid #2.
