Just curious what people's take is on this. I know we have a lot of knowledgeable people around here who know LCD's so I thought I'd get some feedback.

Not really sure what he was wishing to accomplish, he seems to want to do it to save money but as one of the comments points out, the lamps would of been easy to replace without changing to LED's. Is there really any reasons to do this? My thoughts are that you might see degredation in picture quality unless you're very careful to make sure your using LED's with the same light output.

Your thoughts?

That site adds articles quickly. Search on "backlight" to find the article in question.

I thought it was technically interesting but not of any value as a display upgrade. The LED backlighting is mainly an energy saver unless you use something like the Samsung "local dimming" feature to increase display contrast.

I found that his actual website has a lot more info and more pictures.

The bottom pictures I think tell the story, the lighting is really bad and the bleeding is horrendous. I know he just did this as a quick project but if he had used the stock bulbs he might still have a monitor. I was mostly interested in the practical reasons for doing something like this - but after finding his main website, I think I answered that for myself.
