Where I work they gave me an External Compaq 15/30gb DLT drive.

OS - WinXP Pro is the server

OS - WinXP Pro is the HTPC

Drives on server - XP/NTFS stripe array consisting of 4x120gb drives, standalone 80gb

Drives on HTPC 120GB NTFS

I will connect the tape drive to the server.

What backup software do you recommend? I would like to keep cost down.

I use NTBackup which is included free in XP and 2000 (and even in XP Home) for all my backups. It certainly has a cost advantage!

The only issue I have found with the NTBackup software is that it cannot backup the system state (registry, etc) of networked computers. The workaround I am currently using is to use NTBackup on the client computer to backup the system state to a file on the client. Then I use NTBackup on the server computer to backup the entire client (including the system state backup). Bit of a hack, but accomplishes the objective without buying expensive backup software.

Cheers

Lester
