Bad HDMI Connection

688 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mjones73
I use a DVI to HDMI cable from RAM, to connect between a Dell PC (DVI) to Panasonic (HDMI) TH37PD25 Plasma. The HDMI connection is very poor, with no picture unless I wiggle the cable right where it plugs into the TV (even then it's hard to maintain the picture. I don't know if the problem is the cable or the jack on the TV. I may have to try another cable but has anyone here had any experience with this.

Thanks

Try another cable, only way you'll rule out the cable or the input.
I had that happen in reverse. The HDMI port went bad on my HR10-250. Like Matt said the only/best thing to do is try it w/ another cable.
Was it a mechanical problem with the HR10 (maybe bent pins)? Was it repaired?

The HR10 was only 7 months old. CC service plan simply replaced the box. It had the same characteristics as your describing. You had to stick your tongue out just the right way to keep a good picture. As soon as you let go it went to crap again. I hope it's not your TV. That would obviously really suck.
Repaced the cable and now I have solid reception.

Thanks

Two questions. One, I thought HDMI was a digital connection like optical or coax digital audio in that you either get exactly the right signal or nothing--so a bad cable would give you no signal, and if you think you have a bad signal (picture/sound) then changing the cable will do nothing. Is that not right?

Two, I have an LG LDA-511 DVD player connected to an LG 30FS4D TV with HDMI. On most of my store-bought DVD movies there are many large areas of annoying artefacts or pixelated colors, especially red but also black/blue/brown/flesh and others. At first I suspected the HDMI cable, but if what I asked above is correct there should be no issue with a digital cable, should there? I bought a second one of these DVD players to try just in case but the same thing happens. I also tried the same DVD player with the same TV but with component video cables and the same thing happens, but to a lesser extent. Could it be a bad HDMI port/jack on the TV? Could it be an issue with copy protection/macrovision?

I've read many reviews of this DVD player and only one out of scores of them mentions this issue with pixelated areas of the screen. It's too obvious for people to be missing, if it's a pervasive issue. I've found very few reviews of the TV though.

TIA

1) A bad cable can cause no signal or a drop in data which will show up as sparklies on the screen...

2) I'm using a cheap Panasonic progessive DVD player with my 30FS4D via component and I've yet to see any obvious macroblocking or defects in the picture, I'd have to suggest trying a different DVD player first.
