I've had my 42 inch 800U for about 6 months. A few months back, I calibrated it with the AVS Blu-ray, HCFR, and an EyeOne LT.

I'm still getting minor banding on my PS3 (my only source - no cable or satellite). It's slightly noticeable on the XMB - with the fading colors. I've seen it in Blu-rays like Coraline (her face had distinct false contouring).

Is this just a weakness of the panel (8-bit?)?

Will something like a DVDO Edge (Anchor Bay video processor) convert the color gamut to something the TV can handle without artifacts?

I have also seen this banding (false contouring) on the TH-42PX80U -- have only noticed it on expansive scenes of what is supposed to be a smooth-gradient of illumination (such as a spotlight, the sky illuminated by the sun, etc). I called Panasonic and they claim no knowlege of this problem and said it was probably the set-top box causing the probelm, but I get it no matter what the source: set-top box, DVD player, or OTA high definition.
