I have been trying to compare 720p and 1080i output from my Toshiba HD-A1 (firmware 2.0) and I can not make up my mind what looks better

So, what do you guys use? And is there a general opinion on which is best?

I would use 1080I...you'll get a harder image then 720P. I'm sure most guys on the forum will agree ,but as always...let your eyes have the final say.

Probably meant sharper... which is how I'd characterize it.

I have a 1271 and a 1272 - not too far off your 808. Unless the scan lines bother you (depends on your vision, seating distance, screen size, and how good your projector and setup are), go with 1080i for sure. I think 720p is a very nice improvement over 480p, but 1080i resolution is simply mindblowing - especially on slow pans and locked down shots. Wow.

Is there a guide somewhere to optimize spot size???

Not really, Tim's (Videograbber) rule of thumb is to make the height to width ratio of your spot 1.33:1. Do not use barco's internal pattern to do this, use an external dot hatch pattern when doing the astig.
