With the announcement of a theatrical push for DTS:X, perhaps we might finally see something tangible about the (rumored) "20.1 Cinema Audio Solution Coming from Barco" (link):

"The Barco 20.1 immersive sound solution (no formal name yet) will add more speakers to the configuration in the theater. It also appears to scrap the legacy 5.1 component in Auro 11.1 and focus on using all the speakers in a new way. These speakers will now be effectively clustered into zones. Each zone can have one or more speakers attached to it. There will be six zones in the front (high bank and low bank), four zones on the right, left and back sides (high and low, font and back), and two overhead zones, plus the subwoofer (.1)."

Unfortunately, I missed an opportunity to see a nearby theatrical release|demo showing of the "The Maze Runner" in 3-screen "Barco Escape" format . . . but I could watch it using 3x 24" displays side-by-side in my home-office if it is ever released on BD!!!!  :D

The two immersive technologies together might prove "interesting".

I saw last year, unless some rich RED 4k videographer who owns a chopper starts doing 3 camera flyover films, the 3 screen thing is too limited. Needs a destination venue, not gonna fly on multiplexes.

At the demo they had people hand waiving to control the image colors, it felt forced.

I saw the maze runner and the side content was pretty basic, probably works better at home.

They hired the former owner of RED to become a Cinema Vangelist. That guy may be too wealthy to come up with the more practical solutions, you need a little pressure to come up with truly innovative solutions (i think), last year it felt like the MC of a gimmicky 3 ring circus.

Let's see if they elevated the experience this year.
