Basement Theater

721 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  empirebuilder
We are in the process of building out our basement, we will have on large room that we will use as a home theater, bar, sitting area. Please advise on how well you think my bose acoustimass 16 system will sound with a thick carpet pad and carpet? Reading some things about bass not being as good, but since the theater isnt enclosed in a actual room (all one room) wasnt sure if plywood would matter or not if i decided to install plywood first than carpet pad and than carper?

duhaas,

I think the size of the room will matter a lot more than whether you put down plywood first. The Bose system may sound -ok- in a small room, though will lack bass, but I doubt in a large room you will be satisfied with the sound.
duhaas,

I have an older Acoustimass system in a small room, and even I have found that a powered subwoofer is necessary. You can get a small cheap one for under $100 which will boost out your bass. I don't think the carpeting will adversely affect. At worse case, you could get another subwoofer - place one half way along the side wall and another half way across the back (if I remember the subwoofer acoustics correctly, someone can correct me). That will spread your bass across the room.

I put the Acoustimass smaller speakers on the Bose wall mount brackets which worked out very well. You might find the center is a little weak in a big room - I am considering replacing that next....
