I'm planning a home theater and am looking into buying a modest

receiver, possibly a Yamaha RX-V2400 or similar.

Do receivers with 6.1 or 7.1 all have adjustable volume controls

for each speaker to set the balance in the rooms? The few I

saw on a visit to Best Buy yesterday seemed only to have a

large volume knob.

YES.

They have individual channel trim levels for the center & surround channels, then the large volume control is the Master for ALL channels. These are adjusted either through the OSD and/or by the remote control.

Yes. During initial set-up of the receiver, you will perform a system calibration where you will adjust each speaker so they are all at the same volume level output. From then on, you just need to use the "large volume knob".

Of course, the neat thing about the Yamaha (and the Pioneer Elites) is that they come with a microphone and will set the sound level for each speaker for you (as well as setting some other stuff).

Without that microphone/auto setup, you really need a sound meter to set the levels yourself.
