Basic Beginners Calibration set/tools.

this may be a silly type question (obvious noob question as well).

I few weeks ago I spoke to (PM'd) Dave Hancock about ISF training and where to find info on it, he was kind enough to provide some great information and gave me some helpful tips.

my question is, after reviewing the information I would like to get into some type of ISF class/training but at the current moment with my job and home life I don't really any extra time to schedule anything in, I'm a very quick learner and a lot of things I've been self taught (I'm sure a lot of you are the same way) does anyone have any recommendation for what type of tools for calibration are good for beginners, I would like to pick some stuff up and familiarize myself with them and see how they work.

would anyone have any good inexpensive (incase this turns out not to be my cup of tea I won't go broke in the process) tools they can recommend or is this type of thing discouraged until you take an actual seminar?

any thought or input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Cheap stuff ....

Get the spydertv probe ... and the calman program since it works as a professional tool. That gets you started on the learning curve.

You'd best be an enthusiast going into ISF or the pro calibration world ... because if you are not ... then you are headed for disappointment ... staring at a telephone that never rings. This stuff is not a 9-5 job. The learning never stops ...

most of the calibration adventures that you read about in the forums usually centers around the top 1% of all calibrators.

An enthusiast who understands the basics has a huge leg up on the others going into the seminars. You can now ask the right questions ...

I would learn as much as you can before the ISF training so you at least know what you don't know.

As for tools you could download and read the 104 page HCFR thread but I think you respect your time more than that. If you are looking for a single solution then our package CalMAN v3 was designed from scratch to be the best at supporting all levels of users from the novice to the pro. We have had users quote "The documentation itself was worth the price alone" about our solution.
Thanks for the input to both of you.

as far as being an enthusiast I have a feeling this will be up my alley, I've always enjoyed doing this type of work and usually my friends and family are coming to me for setup and basic calibration of their HD and SS equipment and then my family usually farms me out to their friends...LOL

this way I figure if I can get certified I can atleast make a few bucks off of doing this and have the tools to perform a better job than just DVE or Avia.

I just picked up a Sony 50A3000 set and have been following the tweaks thread on the RP board and am amazed at all the customization this set allows for over my old set and I've been having fun learning how to adjust all the options and have been experimenting to find what I like best.

You should think about the i1 pro spectrometer if you want to work on the A3000 LCOS set. The Spyder probes may not be good enough.

Regards
We also have an i1Pro hardware bundle for our package as well.
I will definitely check that out.

thank you
Don't forget the Display LT. It is typically regarded as more accurate than the Spyder, but not as accurate as the i1 Pro. The Display LT is around $150, where the i1 Pro is around $600-$700 last time I looked.
Yes Display2 LT is a very good meter to start out with. You can always grow in to a i1Pro.
I did some research on the Display2 LT and it may be because of my lack of knowledge on these devices so if someone could clarify for me I'd appreciate it.

if I were to purchase the Display2 LT I could use it on my A3000 set?

Yes. I use one all the time on my A3000. There is always some question about which meters perform best with which technologies. SXRDs are supposedly one of the harder technologies for a meter to deal with, but we have seen good results from the Display LT. It likely won't be as accurate as more expensive meters, but it is a heck of an improvement over using color filters.
Is it better to go with the Display2 LT or Display LT? It looks like the Display2 LT is an upgrade over the Display LT model and adds about $50 to the price tag. Is it worth the extra $50?

I'm looking to use it to do my own calibration on 3 plasma screens (Pioneer, Panasonic and older Sony) we have and do some friends' plasmas if it works well. Is it a good product to use for plasma screens for the do-it-yourselfer?

Thanks
The hardware is identical. Only the bundled software is different.

I have a sencore cp288 color analyzer that I have used on a couple of plasmas and have had very good results with it (IMHO). I have posted about using it with a plasma and everyone has told me that it doesnt work with a plasma which has left me a little confused. But the more I read about other devices they also dont seem to work with a plasma according to the reviews I have read. My question is that if I had an approximate spending limit of around a $1000.00 what would be the best all around piece of equipment to buy if I wanted to calibrate a 42" plasma panny and a front dlp projector?

Your CP288 will do just fine on Plasma or CRT it's what it was designed for. For your DLP you need a Display2 which will also work very well with Plasma and CalMAN v3. Or you could get in to a i1Pro with our software for under you spending limit.
I have found a couple of different things for the i1pro when I do a search, would it be possible for you to post a link so that I can be sure where both talking about the same product so that I could get a little more information about it.
Here is the link to our master hardware FAQ. You will need to register for free, we do this to keep out the spammers.

Any advantage of one software over another? I'm considering buying an eye-one Display 2, or LT.

What is required (software-wise) to get direct readings of CIE coordinates and luminance values?

I also have a Sony A3000. In addition to the normal stuff I may want to adjust a separate grayscale for watching black and white movies.
