Pardon me for very naive question... I've Denon 5900 . If I use DVI output, do i bypass Denon's video DAC's and use my display's (Pioneer Elite 730HD) instead? If thats true why would I want to bypass Denon's superior DAC's. What's the benefit of using DVI/ HDMI out?

If I buy iSCAN HD and use SDI upgrades on both my DVD player and Iscan....will I again bypass my video DACS in DENON and if I am using CRT display will it give me any advantage doing this and how? Thanks for your input in advance...

That depends on what kind of RPTV you have.

If you have a digital one (I suspect you do), then no DACs are involved at all. When the signal is in DVI mode, it stays digital until it reaches the DLP or LCD (or whatever display technology your RPTV uses).

OK..a few more basic questions. I have a Mits 62725 dlp and a Denon 5900. In the Mits forums it has been stated, by those who have read the 62725 schematics, that through hdmi the Mits does a d/a conversion. I have also heard this is common on many displays.

So does this mean that a SDI mod would not benefit me?

Would I use component or hdmi if I get the mod?

Is this mod something that your significant other has seen and said wow to the new PQ on the same dvds played before the mod?

Or do I just buy a Mosquito that I see in all the HT mags?

I do not know much about the technical aspects of the mod so any information is appreciated. I have read most of the old SDI threads (that is how I am here) and could not find the answer.

Help me out before I spend a few grand. Thanks.

I'm going to take a stab at this because I'm in a similar situation. I could be wrong, but the benefit you'd get with the Iscan HD+. I'll assume you are looking to get away from the 5900's macroblocking. I am.

Using the 5900's DVI output, you are using the mpeg decoder, deinterlacer and scaler (assuming you put out 720p or 1080i). Even at 1080i, I think the deinterlacer is used. It's the deinterlacer that causes the MB in the 5900. So, you will not be bypassing the processing in the 5900.

To avoid the deinterlacing within the 5900, you either need to send 480i out of the component outputs or get the SDI mod to send 480i out. At this point, you can send it to an iscan HD or HD+ and let that unit do the deinterlacing and scaling. AT this point you are using the 5900's mpeg decoder and bypassing the faroudja chip that causes the MB.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I have an HD+ on order. In the meantime, I switched my output from the 5900 to component 480i rather than 720p from the DVI into my samsung dlp. The picture isn't quite as good but the MB is gone.

Will_Morr,

You have stated the issue/question perfectly. To avoid the macroblocking I am also using 480i over component with the 5900. It is very nice PQ on my Mits 62725 but hopefully someone can shed some light on whether the iscan gets us a higher quality PQ solution.

In addition to your points, I want feedback on whether others with experience think it is worth the $$. I mean we could wait for the 5910.

Anyone?
