Hi,
If you are talking about the bass tone control in your AVR, it (typically) controls only the bass in the front speakers, allowing you to add or subtract bass above the crossover to the subwoofer. (I believe that in some AVR's, the center channel is also affected by the tone control. That is not the case with Denon/Marantz.)
The subwoofer (sometimes labelled "Bass") volume controls, either in the AVR, or on the subwoofer gain control, affect bass volumes below the crossover to the subwoofer. To understand how your crossovers work, I recommend that you read the link below:

It is most likely that the excessive bass you hear is from your subwoofer, unless you have increased the bass in your front speakers via the tone control in your AVR. If it is your subwoofer, turning down the sub's volume, using several different methods, should make an immediate difference. Subwoofer volume can be added and subtracted via several different methods in the AVR, and different AVR makers label those controls in different ways. If it doesn't specifically say "Tone Control", the bass control will affect only the subwoofer volume.
If you have Denon/Marantz, with Audyssey, it is possible that DEQ (DynamicEQ, which is engaged automatically whenever you perform an Audyssey calibration) is giving you too much bass boost. If you have DEQ, you could experiment with turning it off. If you do that, you may want to add back a little bit of independent subwoofer boost. To learn more about how DEQ works, you can read the link below:

I hope this helps!

Mike
