Hi Guys.

First post here, and had a concern that may not even be warranted.

I am building a soffit surrounding the room.  There is enough space for it to fit a 15" wide roll of pink fiberlgass insulation perfectly.  It is about 10" deep so a 9.5" thick insulation can fit quite nicely.

My question is, cant the fibers blow through the speaker grille cloth and into the room?

I know one can use denim insulation, but it is like 10X the price...

One last question, is it more beneficial to have the bass trap open on the bottom of the soffit or the side?  My current plan was the bottom...

Thanks!

I have had this same question. For reference, here is my build http://www.avsforum.com/t/1510721/the-bass-for-the-98-diy-build . As you can see I have built soffits like you are considering. In my case, the soffits will have the insulation covered with 6 mil poly and over that fabric covered panels. The fabric will be acoustically transparent. The 6 mil poly sheeting is mostly to reflect some of the higher frequencies back .. thereby not making the room sound too dead from over absorption. But the plastic sheeting will also keep the fibers at bay. My screen wall will have insulation covered only by GOM FR701 black fabric. Will this be sufficient to keep all the fibers from getting into the room.? I think so. but in my case my whole front wall will be covered with removable fabric panels so if it ever becomes a problem i can take out some panels and add something to eliminate the problem. Maybe a ridgid fiberglass panel to enclose the pink fluff??

I did the bottom too but I dont know if one is preferred over the other. Though both being open would be better than only one.

Thanks!

The fabric will secure the fiberglass very well. I doubt fiberglass will be raining out of it. Any concerns and you can put 2 layers of fabric.

I used fiberglass panels which worked well instead of the fluff. These are a bit more rigid.
