The purpose of this thread is for me to get acquainted with and horse around with the new O-Scope that I bought (a Fluke 43B)

This is NOT a Measuring Amplifiers V2 thread. (That will be something else entirely... and will do LATER).


This will be for non-rigorous tests, and me learning the do's and don'ts (since I've never done this before).

A simplified summary of its specifications and abilities as they relate to audio, is as follows:


Active Power in Watts

Apparent Power in VA

Reactive Power in VAR

Power Factor Rating

THD%

Ohms

Transient Voltage

Voltage Sags and Swells

Inrush

Volts, Amps, Hertz

RMS, Peak-Peak

o-scope


Up to 1000amps (or more)

DC to 30MHz scope mode (automatic calculations are limited to 10hz to 15khz however.)


Here is a visual representation of what each of those modes looks like on the scope:









One thing that caught my eye is that Fluke has a free version of their FlukeViewer, in which everyone can view the Fluke device exports in raw capture-points form.

Unfortunately I'm not certain if it is compatible with this scope. LOL (What are you DOING Fluke? What good is it if you don't support most of the product line?)

The first problem I see with this meter is that it can only record two metrics at a given time (and likely within only one mode, that is locked).

Which likely means that the device under test will need to survive long-enough for me to save each mode's results.

Power, Scope and Harmonics are the ones we care about most, so that will likely require at minimum three 500ms bursts (quick finger mcgraw style)






The first thing I'm gonna do is measure the frequency response of all the devices in my rack (amps, DAC, soundcards, you name it) and then the combined summed of their power factor / consumption when powering actual speakers and subs.


I might measure the waveform of my projector, space heater, popcorn-maker, microwave, and my 18 halogen bulb lighting system and a CFL bulb too, just for giggles.





and then I might start testing amps.Starting with the well known and ever-fresh: EP4000

I have no idea where I'll find the components for a load bank.

My system playing Bass Mekanik - Moonstone (20hz) @ 100db.


An increase of 250watts RMS.

Increase of 0.2%THD distro distortion.

Here is the Crown iTech 8000, 1 channel, 60hz @ 133volts RMS unclipped & 155volts RMS with 20db of clipping.


Noise-Floor was ~150mV un-muted and ~4mV muted.


^^^This the voltage, beyond which, the clipping light activates.


Here is the THD Limited Voltage test:

~148vRMS @ ~1%THD and ~5%THD @ ~156vRMS

note: VPL light activates at 1%THD

The clip light activates at just under 1% THD

80vRMS @ 1%THD, 80vRMS @ 5%THD (This thing refused to go above 80vRMS no matter what, it has a very strict limiter.)

The USB converter is coming from China. It just shipped out now.


Paid like $2 for it (LOL
) verses the $190 that Fluke wanted for their fancy-pants cable; and I'm not even sure if that cable would work on this unit (probably not?)

I'll make sure I put them into some pretty-looking spreadsheets and I'll have supporting screenshots and pictures too (not text form, cause that's just too ugly LOL

Burst power defined as: 500ms on, 1000ms off, 33% Duty Cycle.

Fan Noise is measured at 3ft distance (maybe?)

Are you planning on pulling the amps out of the rack for testing? I personally think you should leave them in as that would give better real world results. But then you are dealing with variables that couldn't be reproduced. (I'm just referring to temp and noise testing)

I'm keeping it until it explodes (most likely). I will keep it in mind though!

It works. Here is the first set of metrics. (Still getting to know the device, a lot to learn).


1) HTPC + Power Conditioning + one 16w CFL



2) Same as #1 + One row of Halogen lights



3) Same as #1 + with all 3 rows of Halogen lights on.



2140watts RMS already!


Good thing I only use one row (and I'm looking to replace them with LEDs which are 1/8th the power!!!)

With all my amps at idle + #2, here is the power consumption.


Roughly an extra 600watts RMS and 800kVA is consumed. (Better than I thought!)
