Battle of the pretty big but apparently not massive towers... yet another help choose a speaker thread

5510 Views 27 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  clipghost
TLDR version up front:
Option 1: Monolith THX 460T LR, THX 365c center, 365 minitowers for surround
Option 2: JBL 590s, Emotiva C2+ center, JBL 530 surround
Option 3: Other- KEF, Revel, Focal, Paradigm, etc...

Hey,

I'm going to put a 5.1 system in my living room. HT gets the nod for usage over music. The room is open to my kitchen and entryway so it's about 5400 cubic feet. The towers are going against the wall on either side of my TV, the placement is non-negotiable. I'm not dragging my speakers 3 feet out into my living room. Sorry, not sorry. I've chosen floorstanders for the LR because I think they look cool. Probably going to pair them with a denon avr and emotiva amp. Subwoofer will be the Monolith THX M215 because I think it's awesome.

For the moment I've narrowed it down to JBL studio 590 or Monolith THX series. One is super popular versus a relative unknown. I know they are both budget ish but I'm going to be happy as long as it sounds good, and both these speakers get pretty rave reviews. I'm not looking for anything super audiophile grade. If I choose JBL I'll pair them with the Emotiva C2+ center since the JBL center is weak. The Monoliths are front ported which I guess is a point in their favor because of my placement issues, but I can port plug the JBLs for whatever that's worth.

Other options I've considered are KEF Q series, Paradigm Premier, Revel, or Focal Chora, but they are all probably twice the price and I don't know how much of an upgrade any of them would be. Note: I've excluded the Emotiva T2+ from this poll because I have an emotiva set up in another room and although I do like them a lot, what fun is having a bunch of the same gear.

I already have some emotiva towers in my little theater room, so that is why they aren't included. I like them, but I want something different. Thanks for reading and any help.

Jbl is proven bang for the buck with the 5 series... Maybe some wharfedale evo towers...monoprice isn't on my radar.. Doesn't mean they aren't good ....
I'm really starting to think the search function on the internet is broken. Is Google down?

Nope search in the forum works, just tested it.
Now that I think about it I think you're cutting yourself short. You should be looking at the p s a MTM-210's

Hi,

Budget?
Distance from speakers to listening position approximately?
Where will the sub(s) go?
Is a 3rd tower an option for your center (ideal)?

Look into:

Chane (A, L & 700 series:)

HTD Level Three:

Power Sound Audio (actually big):

Ascend:

Very best,

How massive do you want to go?
Chane is currently accepting reservations fot the second and final release of these. The first run sold before they were even available.
If you want big sound, get big speakers.

I got confused with the title "Massive" ...thought this post is gonna have floor to ceiling speaker...

That would be JTR

Or Tekton

get a pair of Tekton Double Impacts and add as you can afford it.
Speaking of big...

The JBLs are proven. The monoprice are pretty good. Audioholics did a review on them. Neither are what you would call "lookers".

Yeah I got no clue two 8” woofers vs 4. 6.5” which has more cone area!?? There larger but not massive... big subs are massive and other 10”+ woofer speakers . I can’t dream of affording those

Haha, $12000 isn't in the budget. All the speakers I listed would be about a $1000. The most expensive set up I looked at would be about $3600.

To be clear, I'm not looking for the biggest speakers I can find. I just picked out two that are generally considered on the larger side as my frontrunners.

I also went ahead and edited the thread title for you guys.
Aside from being a proven performer, the JBL has free return shipping unlike the Monoprice.

Therefore, it's a no-brainer to try the JBL first especially while they're on sale. If you have no aesthetic objections to them (and they are much nicer looking in person than on the website pics) I predict you'll be very happy with them.

Keeping tower speakers up against a wall is going to result in bloated and flabby bass response. Sorry, not sorry.

If you are looking at JBLs have you looked at the Infinity's?
JBl, JBL, Then look at JBL. The 590's are pretty incredible for the cost. The Infinitys are a good choice as well. What are you really after? If its the best output for the dollar spent.... Did I mention the 590's?
